One of the most respected specialists in childhood neurological disorders in America, Dr. Robert Melillo has been helping children overcome learning disabilities for over 30 years. His areas of expertise include: autism spectrum disorders, PDD/NOS, ADD/ADHD, OCD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, Tourette’s, bipolar disorder, and other mental, attention, behavioral and learning disorders. He is also an expert in diet, nutrition and neuroimmune disorders in children and adults.
As a clinician for 30 years, a university professor, brain researcher, best selling author, radio and TV host, his cutting-edge research and success with over a thousand children in his private program are what led to the creation of Brain Balance Achievement Centers. Dr. Melillo has a private practice now that helps adults and children with various learning disabilities. He is focused on addressing the primary issue in most learning disabilities and behavioral disorders which is known as a functional disconnection. Since he introduced this concept, functional disconnection has become one of the leading theories in the world related to Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and more. This work is leading the way toward understanding the underlying nature of these disorders and their causes.
DR. MELILLO’S BOOKS
In 2004, Dr. Melillo published Neurobehavioral Disorders of Childhood: An Evolutionary Perspective, a working theory textbook on developmental disabilities. This book continues to be utilized on both a graduate and undergraduate level in Universities around the world. It has been translated into Korean and Chinese. However, it was Dr. Melillo’s best-selling 2009 book, Disconnected Kids, that catapulted him to national prominence. Greeted with overwhelming positive response, the thesis of that book serves as the foundation for the work being done at Brain Balance Centers around the country. Dr. Melillo’s leadership in the field, as well as his personal dedication to the creation of a drug-free multi-modal educational program for children with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, and autism spectrum disorders, have made him one of the most sought-after speakers on the subject today, both in the U.S. and abroad. Disconnected Kids has been translated into Chinese, Korean and Hebrew and there are French and Italian versions being completed now. He completed the second edition of Disconnected Kids, released in March of 2015.
Dr. Robert Melillo, the creator of the Brain Balance Program™, is an internationally known chiropractic neurologist, professor, researcher, author, and expert in childhood neurological disorders. He is available to talk about Special Needs Children and The Coronavirus and says:
The Coronavirus is mostly a threat to the “at risk” communities”,especially very old and very young especially kids with developmental disabilities . Kids with Disabilities all have severely dysregulated immune systems ,this make them extremely vulnerable to the Coronavirus.
Many kids with disabilities especially left brain disabilities like dyslexia, dyscalculia, learning disabilities have weak immune systems and are a great risk of not only getting the virus but of not being able to fight the infection and risk of death.
Other Kids especially those with right brain issues like Autism, ADHD, OCD,Tics etc have immune systems that are hyperactive which may result in a severe immune reaction. This can trigger not only severe inflammation ,but also can trigger an autoimmune reaction which can lead to things such as asthma, attacks and maybe even seizures.
The best way to protect against this is to use some specific supplements that can help both populations of children .The single most important supplement for any immune issues is Vitamin D 3,this supplement which most people are deficient in especially kids with disabilities helps to balance the immune system so it is not over or under reactive
Many kids with disabilities put dirty or contaminated things in their mouths or constantly touch their face and mouth .They may not wash their hands so caretakers need to take care to wash their hands for them regularly and try to disinfect their environment including toys, computers, IPads, etc.
Vitamin D is also protective for the gut lining and can help promote a better barrier. Zinc has also been shown to inhibit the coronavirus and block replication of these viruses in culture in the lab. In general the other supplements that help the immune system are Zinc, Selenium, Vitamin D, Vitamin A palmitate,N acetyl Cysteine and Glutathione.
For kids with neurological imbalances doing specific brain exercises and stimulation can help improve the brains regulation of the immune system .
Imbalances in the nervous system lead to imbalances in the immune system and gut that can leave children at risk to the coronavirus.
The idea is that with a virus there is no medication so the only defense is your own immune system . There are supplements that can help but the most important regulator if immune system is your brain and the two hemispheres regulate it differently . The left brain boosts the immune response the right hemisphere dampens it . So fir viral infections stimulating the left hemisphere is maybe the most important thing anyone can do anywh
When it comes to any virus it is all about your health . There is no medication, antibiotics don’t work so your only defense is your own immune system . To strengthen your immune response the best thing you can do is to take high dose Vitamin D and Vitamin C . The most important factor in regulating your immune response is your brain . The two hemispheres regulate it differently the left brain activated and strengthens the immune response so you should your left brain which will activate your immune system. How? Listen to music with only your right ear especially happy music with happy words or Mozart all are very left brain stimulating . Use your phone inly in right side , use vibration or massager on the right side of your body . Surround your environment with the color red, get red glasses . Watch funny movies laughing is a left brain activity so laugh as much as you can. Use pleasant smells especially using your left nostril . There are many more things you can do to stimulate the left brain you can find them in my book Disconnected Kids . If you have a right brain deficit like ADHD , OCD , etc you may have a overactive left brain so then be careful , you don’t need to stimulate your left brain because it is already strong and your risk of infection is low .
Use this to educate kids about health and hygiene
1. Tell them that the virus affects people that are not healthy ,so the best way to protect yourself is to eat healthy foods ,exercise ,get a good night sleep and not sitting around playing video games or watching TV,eating sugar and junk food lower your immune system ,vegetables and fruits are god for your immune system.
2. That they must clean themselves ,wash their hands regularly every day, cover their mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing ,washing, taking showers etc
3. Sunlight kills viruses ,so it is very healthy to be outside in the sun ,they can socially distance but being outside is a good thing ,they are more likely to get sick indoors then they are out in fresh air and sunlight.
4. Let them know that this is very rare ,that infectious disease is not generally a big issues if you are healthy ,that this will pass and everything will go back to normal .
5.Taking vitamins is one of the best ways to protect yourself from all kinds of illness,Vitamin D, Omega 3,Vitamin C,Vitamin A,Zinc are some of the best ways to prevent viruses.
6.Tell your kids that the brain controls your immune system and your health more than anything else ,so do things that are good for the brain especially the left brain .
Puzzles ,board games ,chess, and reading a good book ,especially a fiction book.
