"If you have not failed, you have never tried anything new."

Alan Bernstein joined me at 9:30am pst this morning to talk about his book The Art of Quitting!

If you missed Alan Bernstein on today's show, you can listen to our conversation here.

Find out more about Alan Bernstein

In Mastering the Art of Quitting the authors show us how to let go when we need to and how to start over. A guide to increasing our emotional and mental flexibility, assessing our goals, and knowing when to hang in or bail out, it tackles our tendencies to overanalyze, ruminate, and put a positive spin on situations we actually need to avoid. In a culture which perceives quitting as a last resort, Alan Bernstein and Peg Streep show that it's an essential tool for a happy and successful life. They explore attitudes which apply to goals in many areas of life including love, relationships, and work.

ABOUT ALAN BERNSTEIN - from his website

I am a psychotherapist and career development authority in New York City and received my BA from the University of Michigan followed by a year in Europe working in the Danish Post Office and hanging out at Jazz clubs in Paris. I then completed the course work for a PhD in English Literature at Rutgers University and was appointed its youngest faculty member.

I soon realized that this was not the career I wished to pursue and began the process of "fully conscious decision-making" exemplified in my writing. I went back to school, supported by a National Institute of Mental Health Fellowship, and received an MSW from Yeshiva University. That started my career consulting to private agencies and to New York's Metropolitan Hospital while maintaining faculty appointments at New York Medical College (Psychiatric Residency Training) and the New York University Graduate School (Post-Masters and Doctoral Programs in Psychotherapy). I also began professional exploration of life transitions, accessing creative resources to energize bold moves.

I maintain affiliations with companies I admire. As an outdoor enthusiast I developed a program with Outward Bound, which encourages people to experience their personalities from a fresh perspective and to relate their insights to choosing their life's work. In addition, I partnered with The Princeton Review organization to explore with students how to access their deeper motivations for significant life choices during and after college.

I am a founding member of the Center for Group Studies, an internationally known institution for the training and development of group psychotherapy, as well as a dedicated member of the New York City community. I benefited from attending its public schools and belong to numerous civic institutions, including the New York Cycle Club and the New York Road Runners Club. I also serve on three not-for-profit Advisory Boards, which touch the lives of many disadvantaged New Yorkers: Creative Alternatives of New York, Publicolor and Camp Interactive.

I believe that the process of transition, though daunting, can be cultivated and become an adventure in itself.

Dermot Lambert, the leader singer and songwriter from cult Irish band "Blink" joins me Monday on Get the FUNK Out!

Disused Roads - Dermot Lambert

Disused Roads, is the new single from Dermot Lambert, the leader singer and songwriter from cult Irish band "Blink"

In 1994 Blink released their debut LP, A Map of the Universe, on EMI Records and followed up with The End Is High (1998) and Deep Inside the Sound of Sadness (2004). Their debut spawned 4 hit singles, Going to Nepal, Happy Day, It's Not My Fault and Cello which led to arena tours with the likes of Crowded House, Moby, The Ramones, Mercury Rev,Lloyd Cole and Oasis. Blink also found time in between to have a "minor altercation" with another band trying to use the same name. The other band became Blink 182.

Lambert's music has achieved multiple acclaim and plaudits including U.S. music magazine, Billboard, naming The End is High their ‘five star album of the month’ on its release and Deep Inside the Sound of Sadness was nominated as Best Irish Album of the Year at the 2005 Meteor Music Awards.

The plaudits have continued with Lambert's first solo outing "TINY" which was released in Ireland on Garage Records in 2013. In just a few months the record has been described as "a magnum opus", "masterful", "soulful" and "a classy solo debut". Read what people had to say about it here.

Disused Roads will be released on download on February 10th and was recorded in Dublin and produced in New York by Howie Beno who's currently involved with twiddling knobs on latest releases by Depeche Mode and Katy Perry.
