NEWPORT BEACH, CA – April 9, 2015– San Francisco Bay area film Director, Marcelina Cravat ‘s Award-winning Angel Azul”, feature-length environmental documentary narrated by Peter Coyote, to screen at the Newport Beach Film Festival at the Fashion Island Cinema on April 25th at 5:45pm in Theater 5 and April 27 at 3:15.

Daughter of late actor Nick Cravat, circus partner, life long friend, and co-star alongside Burt Lancaster in the legendary 1940s-50s films “The Crimson Pirate” and “The Flame and the Arrow”, Cravat’s emerging career as a filmmaker follows her many years as a professional photographer, trained at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California. Upon completion of film school from the Berkeley Digital Film Institute in 2010, Cravat's focus on portrait style documentaries that explore the lives of local artists such as Hayes Valley jazz singer Jacqui Naylor prompted Cravat to document British eco-sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, who is featured in Angel Azul.

Taylor’s hauntingly beautiful artificial coral reefs are created from statues cast from human models and then installed on the ocean floor at El Museo Subacuático De Arte, an underwater museum located off the coast of the Yucatán. MUSA, the world’s first underwater museum, has been referred to as one of the top 25 Wonders of the World by National Geographic magazine and called “one of the world’s most unique travel destinations” by Forbes Magazine.

Angel Azul documents the creation of Taylor’s symbol of hope: an angel with wings made from live fan coral that flow back and forth with the tide. The film takes a turn when Taylor’s deployed statues including the “Silent Evolution” designed to raise awareness about the urgent need to address some of today’s   most pressing environmental issues, are suffocated by prolific blooms of weedy algae. Scientists such as Dr. Sylvia Earle are asked to help explain the issues surrounding coral reef demise and provide suggestions for solutions that not only impact the Mesoamerican Coral Reef where Taylor’s statues reside, but coral reefs worldwide that are dying at unprecedented rates and expected to completely disappear within our lifetimes if immediate action is not taken.

“Angel Azul” received praise at its world premiere at The Environmental Film Festival, Washington, D.C., in March 2014 as a documentary that blends art and science to deliver a powerful message: the choices we make today will determine what we leave to future generations.

“Everything connects,” says Dr, Sylvia Earle.  “Everything we do to our land, our air, our sea will be measured. Nature’s calling… are we listening?”

ANGEL AZUL
Angel Azul explores the artistic journey of Jason deCaires Taylor, an innovative artist who combines creativity with an important environmental solution; the creation of artificial coral reefs from statues he's cast from live models. When algae overtakes the reefs however, experts provide the facts about the perilous situation coral reefs currently face and solutions necessary to save them. Peter Coyote generously provides insightful narration that leaves viewers pondering our connection to this valuable and beautiful ecosystem.

LOGLINE - Through the hauntingly beautiful lure of an eco-sculptor’s underwater life-like statues we witness the birth of an artificial coral reef, learn how we are inextricably connected to the ocean and are left to consider how our choices today will determine what we leave to future generations.

TAGLINE - Casting For a New Generation.

ABOUT GIRL ON THE EDGE

Based on a true story, GIRL ON THE EDGE is a powerful drama from the writer of BLUE VALENTINE and the Executive Producer and Co-Creator of A&E’s THE CLEANER. It follows the journey of a young girl struggling with the aftermath of a horrific trauma, the toll that it takes on her family, and the last chance she has to overcome it in the most unlikely of places.

HANNAH GREEN--a seemingly normal teenager with a tragic past--is targeted and victimized by an online predator, triggering repressed memories and opening old wounds. In the aftermath of the heinous crime, Hannah struggles to cope with her trauma in unhealthy and self-destructive ways.

Unable to give Hannah the help she desperately needs, her father JAKE, and stepmother ANNE are forced to make one of the most difficult decisions a parent can make; they send Hannah to a Residential Treatment Center called Maheo Academy, which has an unconventional approach to recovery with the use of techniques like Equine & Horticulture Therapy to treat its troubled young students.

Still in denial and feeling betrayed by her parents, Hannah refuses to cooperate with the program. Though she lashes out at her peers and the staff alike, Hannah eventually finds a kindred spirit in the matriarchal ESTHER, the sage-like HANK, and especially a rescue horse with its own history of abuse named BETSY. Hannah starts to invest in her own recovery, yet her demons of the past threaten to reverse the progress she has made in this powerful rite of passage.

Developed with exhaustive field research at several real-life Residential Treatment Centers, GIRL ON THE EDGE furthers a global conversation about mental health, confronts social stigmas about therapy, and raises awareness of new challenges adolescents face today.

After the film was brought to the attention of the (NATSAP) National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs, Writer/Producer/Director Jay Silverman was invited to speak before congress in June of 2014 on the subject of making facilities like Maheo more accessible to the general public.

GIRL ON THE EDGE is a moving account of how we can find strength even when we’re at our most vulnerable, and that the only thing keeping us from our own happiness is our willpower to achieve it.

REPOST from Variety.com: Shonda Rhimes Speaks Up For Feminism at Global Women’s Rights Awards

Shondaland and Team “Orange” joined forces to celebrate their respective showrunners, Shonda Rhimes and Jenji Kohan, on Monday at the 10th annual Global Women’s Rights Awards at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. They were honored for “changing the face of media” by the Feminist Majority Foundation.

“How to Get Away with Murder” star Viola Davis summed up the evening’s feminist message by introducing Rhimes with a proclamation. “Shonda Rhimes is one of the most powerful and successful forces in television today. And she’s a woman.”

Rhimes proceeded to carry the feminist torch with declarations including, “I absolutely love being a woman,” “it never occurred to me not to love it,” and, with a wink, “I mean, I think I’m fabulous.”

She told a story about her assistant who expressed wanting to be a man for a day to know how it feels “to have all of that.” Rhimes repeated the refrain, meditating on the complexity of the suggestion.

“My assistant wants to walk through the world just for a day without some guy hitting on her when she runs to Starbucks to get me coffee,” Rhimes said before tumbling deeper into her assistant’s mind. “She wants to not be called ‘cute’ by the security guard. She wants to not be told that she should be a model. She wants to not see the look of surprise on someone’s face when she tells them where she went to college. She wants her boobs to no longer be a topic of conversation. She wants to no longer make 70 cents on the dollar. She wants to not have old men legislate her vagina’s rights. She wants to not know that a glass ceiling ever existed. She wants to not believe that having a baby would end her career. She wants everything in the world to be made for her, be about her and speak mostly to her. Because that’s how it is for men.”

Rhimes said that, in the moment, she rejected her assistant’s idea because it raised a terrifying truth, and “we don’t have time to be terrified.” She closed by clarifying her platform. “I don’t even want men wishing they could be women,” she said. “I just want those words ‘all of that,’ to apply to all of us.”

“Orange is the New Black” creator Kohan expressed her trepidation about following Rhimes’ acceptance speech. “Sucks following Shonda,” she laughed. “She’s so good at this stuff. But I love her and I love her work.”

And love for Kohan was overflowing from the “Orange” cast who came out to support her, includingTaylor Schilling who gushed over her showrunner. “Jenji’s strength and individuality and her sense of freedom and gutsiness powerfully impacted me professionally, obviously, but personally as well,” she said. “I want to be like her when I grow up.”

Laverne Cox joined in on the love-fest with sincerity, gratitude and humility. “She’s just done so much for so many of us,” she said. “Three years ago I was thinking about going back to grad school. I could barely pay my rent. She’s changed my life and all of the people’s lives who have been touched by this show.”

Dotsie Bausch, Olympic Silver Medalist, Former World Record Holder, and founder of Empower Coaching Systems joined me Monday 5/18 at 9:15am!

If you missed Dotsie on today's show, listen here!

The film, Personal Gold (www.personal-gold.com), just screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival!

Heralded as “Miracle on Ice-meets-Moneyball” by Wall Street Journal reporter Reed Albergotti, “Personal Gold” gives a behind-the-scenes experience of four underdog women cyclists who become America’s hope for a medal at the 2012 London Olympics after the men’s team was banned during the Lance Armstrong drug scandal.

The underfunded women relied on technology and the beauty of freindship, in an innovative “Data not Doping” training regimen to do the impossible – win the first U.S. Women’s Track Cycling medal in more than 20 years.

One of these cyclists in the film is Dotsie Bausch, an Irvine home owner and passionate Orange County resident for over 10 years. She is an eating disorder survivor, USN/NBC sports analyst, motivational speaker and animal rights advocate.

ABOUT DOTSIE BAUSCH
During the 2002 off-season, professional cyclist Dotsie Bausch launched her highly successful personal coaching business, which was originally women-specific. Through positive word-of-mouth, Bausch swiftly doubled her business and she began coaching men as well. Producing results for clients has enabled her business to grow each year as has her reputation for being a knowledgeable coach, enthusiastic motivator, and trusted resource for guidance, information and feedback that is second-to-none. Bausch’s coaching philosophy stresses the importance of personalized training programs tailored specifically for the individual with a methodology that emphasizes a mind and body balance.

A 7-time U.S. National Champion and a 2x Pan Am Championships gold medal winner, Bausch is in her fourteenth year of racing. She has spent ten years as a member of the U.S. National Team and has competed in the biggest races around the world for professional teams including T-Mobile, Colavita-Sutter Home and Ouch Pro Cycling. When not racing, she heads up the SC Velo presented by Empower Coaching Systems Southern California based women's road team, which she serves as captain and a mentor to young riders new to the professional peloton. In August of 2012, Bausch became an Olympian and competed on the track in the 2012 London Olympic Games where she won a silver medal alongside her team mates Jennie Reed, Lauren Tamayo and Sarah Hammer in the women's team pursuit event.

While Bausch has scored major victories and impressive results on the bike, perhaps her greatest victory came from resurrecting her own life from the depths of severe eating disorders, which threatened to take her life over a decade ago after a promising modeling career in New York City. It was during her recovery that she discovered her passion for cycling. Bausch’s inspiring personal story has been chronicled in the media and she makes herself available to support women and men around the world in their battle to return to healthy eating and living.

The Louisville, Kentucky native is also a color commentator for Universal Sports network and a journalist for cyclingillustrated.com, who resides with her husband, Kirk, in Irvine, California.

Joe Nunziata an Orange County resident, best-selling author, life coach & business coach joined me Monday May 18th at 9:00am pst!

If you missed Joe on today's show, listen to our conversation here.

Joe Nunziata is an Orange County resident, best-selling author, life coach and business coach who is often referred to as “The Spiritual Dr. Oz”, can discuss how overthinking and pushing too hard often blocks the very solutions and innovations most businesspeople seek in their work. He contends that NOT thinking so much is often the key to success and happiness, and he can provide techniques to help people to think less and intuit more, so they can achieve success with greater ease and joy.
Joe has been featured in, and on, major media outlets that include Good Day New York and Street Talk on Fox TV, Cablevision News 12, Gaiam TV, Better TV, and many others. To see video of Joe on live TV, visit http://joenunz.com/

Joe Nunziata is a best-selling author, spiritual life and business coach, and professional speaker who teaches that to make permanent changes you must clear your negative energy and break destructive patterns of behavior at the core level. The transformational process that Joe developed enables people to create new energy and beliefs designed to achieve sustained, positive growth in all areas of life.

Since 1992, Joe has been delivering his life-changing message at events and seminars and his programs that blend spirituality, psychology, philosophy and the power of internal energy. He has appeared on many television and radio programs including Good Day New York and Street Talk on Fox TV, Cablevision News 12, Gaiam TV, Better TV, The Braveheart Network and various radio stations across the country.

Joe’s work led him to author several books, including Karma Buster,Spiritual Selling, Finding Your Purpose and No More 9 to 5. He has created many audio, video and written programs including Change Your Energy/Change Your Life, No More Mental Barriers, Connecting to Your Spirit and The 7 Keys to Transformation.

The career that Joe has created for himself is not something most would expect from a Brooklyn-born son of a New York police detective and conservatively thinking mother. After losing his father at the age 12, Joe felt he had to become the man of the family, so he got into sales at an early age. Although he achieved some financial success, he saw that he was repeating some of the same self-sabotaging patterns. He explored many of the most popular success models and found that most of them focused primarily on thoughts and actions, but he discovered that until the underlying emotions are addressed, changes to thoughts and actions only deliver temporary changes. This led Joe to continue searching and studying, until he eventually created a process that helps people identify their underlying emotions that hold them in patterns that are negative, or not producing the results they desire. It is this process that he began sharing in 2004 and continues to refine and expand upon.

Joe now helps all types of people, from executives and entrepreneurs, to stay-at-home mothers, to artists, to “dissolve” the emotions and beliefs that stand between them and the achievement of their desires. He is continuing to spread his message throughout the world through speaking engagements, media appearances and his books and products.

In 2012, Joe and his wife of 25 years moved from New York to Southern California to be closer to their son while he attended college. The sunny weather is keeping them here, where they enjoy the beaches, outdoor activities, and a very active spiritual community.

You change your life when you are willing to uncover and face your negative feelings and beliefs.

More about Joe Nunziata:

The transformational process that Joe developed enables people to create new energy and beliefs designed to achieve sustained, positive growth in all areas of life. Since 1992, Joe has been delivering his life-changing message at events and seminars and his programs that blend spirituality, psychology, philosophy and the power of internal energy, which led him to author several books, including Karma Buster, Spiritual Selling, Finding Your Purpose and No More 9 to 5. Harvard-educated physician and New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure Dr. Sara Gottfried joined me today at 9:30am!

If you missed Dr. Sara Gottfried on today's show,

listen to our conversation here!

The Harvard-educated physician and New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure is back and talking about hormones again--this time, how to grow new receptors for our seven metabolic hormones, resulting in improved quality of life.

“Gottfried’s premise is simple: when a woman’s hormones are in sync, she’s a powerhouse, but when they’re out of whack, they wreak havoc on her body and mind. The book is both fun and an informative read [and] Gottfried’s take on the female body is eye-opening and empowering.” (Spirituality and Health magazine)

“Gottfried, a beautiful Harvard Medical School graduate, board-certified gynecologist, and yoga teacher, looks like an advertisement for healthy living and convincingly pushes women to make lifestyle changes rather than immediately asking for conventional prescription drugs to treat problems such as depression.” (Booklist)

Sara speaks about her new book in a video on her website: http://hormonereset.com/

When it comes to weight loss, most people don’t think about hormones. But when you develop resistance to your seven major metabolic hormones—cortisol, thyroid, testosterone, growth hormone, leptin, insulin, and estrogen—your body adjusts by increasingly raising your hormone levels and ultimately slowing down your metabolism. And a slower metabolism leads to weight gain and difficulty losing weight. The solution, Dr. Sara Gottfried contends, is to reset the efficiency of your hormones by repairing and growing new hormone receptors.

Based on leading scientific research, The Hormone Reset Diet is her proven weight loss and energy program to reverse hormone resistance in just three weeks. It will help readers:
Boost metabolism and calorie burning by growing new and fresh thyroid receptors;
Increase weight loss by re-balancing estrogen and progesterone receptors;
Reverse aging by resetting glucocorticoid receptors (for better processing cortisol).

For the last twenty years, this Harvard-MIT educated physician has helped thousands of women address the root hormonal causes of what bothers them most: excess weight, lack of energy, aging, and illness. Going beyond her bestselling The Hormone Cure, this program is the next generation of her deep understanding of hormonal optimization for rapid weight loss.

SARA GOTTFRIED, M.D. is the New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure. After graduating from the physician-scientist training program at Harvard Medical School and MIT, Dr. Gottfried completed her residency at the University of California at San Francisco. She is a board-certified gynecologist who teaches natural hormone balancing in her novel online programs so women can lose weight, detoxify, and feel great. Dr. Gottfried.

THE GROUNDBREAKING TWENTIETH-ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE BOOK THAT STARTED A REVOLUTION

THE GLUTEN-FREE REVOLUTION

Absolutely Everything You Need to Know about Losing the Wheat, Reclaiming Your Health, and Eating Happily Ever After

By Jax Peters Lowell

“Charming, funny, and practical… an information-packed winner.”—Booklist (starred review)

“A must read….[Lowell’s] new book is an essential handbook for all those who avoid gluten….this is a definitive resource.”—Gluten Free & More

“Lowell reprises her role as a gluten-free educator for the general public in this work. She explains what gluten-free means, offering not just a definition, but a look at what it’s like for a gluten-intolerant individual to have to think about every bite consumed and what it means for loved ones who are cooking for those affected.”—Library Journal

Gluten-free has gone far beyond trendiness. Although only about 1% of the population suffers from celiac disease (the autoimmune condition which causes the immune system to attack the intestinal walls in response to consumption of gluten), up to eight times more people may have sensitivity to the protein, or experience ill effects from related conditions, such as IBS and wheat allergy. That translates to about 40 million Americans buying gluten-free products, a $4.2 billion market that continues to grow.

Living gluten-free is a challenge, but Jax Peters Lowell is exactly the right guide. Her new book, THE GLUTEN-FREE REVOLUTION: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know about Losing the Wheat, Reclaiming Your Health, and Eating Happily Ever After (Holt Paperbacks; on sale: February 3, 2015), is the twentieth-anniversary edition of the groundbreaking book that started it all from the author who fired the first shot. Fully revised and updated, THE GLUTEN-FREE REVOLUTION is the ultimate and indispensable guide to living—whether by choice or diagnosis—your best and healthiest life without gluten.

Packed with dozens of mouth-watering recipes, many from some of the world’s best chefs and food personalities including Alice Waters, Thomas Keller, Nigella Lawson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rick Bayless and more, THE GLUTEN-FREE REVOLUTION will inspire you to get into the kitchen, and provide you with all the information you need to navigate any situation you may encounter outside of it—without getting sick.

Jax Peters Lowell provides the essential road map to the pleasures, pitfalls, complications and practicalities of what it means to live gluten-free today. Employing the latest research and offering practical advice for shopping, cooking, entertaining, traveling, college, dating, raising healthy kids and compatibility with other diets, Lowell packs everything you need to know about living gluten-free into just one volume.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jax Peters Lowell, a diagnosed celiac for more than twenty years, was the first to bring national attention to the gluten-free diet. She is a recipient of the Leeway Foundation Transformation Award for her pioneering efforts in bringing public awareness to gluten intolerance. She lives in Philadelphia in a restored bread factory.

Monday @ 9:40am pst special guest Vicki Peterson (the Bangles) joined me on KUCI 88.9fm! If you missed her, listen to our conversation below!

Special thanks to Vicki Peterson for calling in to the show! If you missed our conversation, listen here. And if you are local here in SoCal, visit www.thebangles.com for their up-coming show schedule!

Vicki Peterson has been writing songs and banging on a guitar since the fourth grade, annoying her school friends with her compositions. She and her sister Debbi met Susanna Hoffs in 1981, and the three formed the iconic 80’s pop group The Bangles.

In the early 90’s, Vicki began writing with her good friend Susan Cowsill, performing as the Psycho Sisters (years later they became actual sisters, when Vicki married Susan’s brother John). After a move to New Orleans, the Psychos found themselves absorbed into the enclave of the Continental Drifters, a critically acclaimed songwriters’ collective, which included old friends Peter Holsapple (dB’s) and Mark Walton (The Dream Syndicate).

Two new albums from the Bangles have emerged in the 21st century: 2003's Doll Revolution and Sweetheart of the Sun, released to glowing reviews in 2011. The summer of 2014 saw the long-awaited release of Up On the Chair, Beatrice, the almost mythical, first full-length recording from the Psychos. Vicki has been touring in recent months with both her bands, and will probably start another one if no one puts a stop to this sort of thing.
