Author Sara Alexander, calls in to our KUCI studios 7/31 9:15am pst to talk about "Under a Sardinian Sky" with Janeane Bernstein

LISTEN TO TODAY'S SHOW WITH SARA ALEXANDER!

ABOUT SARA ALEXANDER'S, UNDER A SARDINIAN SKY

“A beautifully told story about one woman’s determination to exorcise the sorrows of her family’s past. It brought tears to my eyes more than once—always a good sign. I look forward to reading more novels by Sara Alexander.” —Holly Chamberlin, author of Home for the Summer

Set against the beautiful backdrop of post-World War II Sardinia, Sara Alexander’s evocative novel is a sweeping story of star-crossed romance between an American lieutenant and a local girl.

Sometimes a family’s deepest silences hide the most important secrets. For Mina, a London-based travel writer, the enigmatic silence surrounding her aunt Carmela has become a personal obsession. Carmela disappeared from her Italian hometown long ago and is mentioned only in fragments and whispers. Mina has resisted prying, respectful of her family’s Sardinian reserve. But now, with her mother battling cancer, it’s time to learn the truth.

In 1952, Simius is a busy Sardinian town surrounded by fertile farms and orchards. Carmela Chirigoni, a farmer’s daughter and talented seamstress, is engaged to Franco, son of the area’s wealthiest family. Everyone agrees it’s a good match. But Carmela’s growing doubts about Franco’s possessiveness are magnified when she meets Captain Joe Kavanagh. Joe, an American officer stationed at a local army base, is charismatic, intelligent, and married. Hired as his interpreter, Carmela resolves to ignore her feelings, knowing that any future together must bring upheaval and heartache to both families.

As Mina follows the threads of Carmela’s life to uncover her fate, she will discover a past still deeply alive in the present, revealing a story of hope, sacrifice, and extraordinary love.

Janeane and Sara will discuss:
  • Raising a family and juggling her creative career, and allowing the mess in (the answer is not just "be really structured and organized!"
  • FOOD! She loves it! Cooking it, eating it, writing about. Sardinian food!
  • How her real life Sardinian background influenced this book
  • Her life as an actress on stage and screen in the UK, with credits such as Dr. Who and the 7th Harry Potter film
Set against the beautiful backdrop of post-World War II Sardinia, this evocative novel follows a travel writer as she unravels family mystery and discovers the star-crossed romance between an American lieutenant and a local girl.

A gorgeous Italian island in the Mediterranean? A post-WWII romance coupled with family secrets? Yes please.

This enchanting novel is a delightful read, perfectly suited for a warm beach with a cold beverage. Readers who enjoy Adriana Trigiani’s historical Italian family sagas will adore Alexander’s debut." --Booklist

"Readers will become immersed in Mina’s journey into the past as she explores the nature and prejudices of her aunt’s time, the complexities of familial relationships, and the allure of love. Alexander’s novel will leave readers riveted until the explosive conclusion." --Publishers Weekly

Janeane chats with the band Con Brio 9/18 at 9:45am pst! @thebandconbrio

About Con Brio

The night before Con Brio headed into the studio to record their first full-length album, 23-year-old Ziek McCarter had a dream. In it, the singer received a visit from his father, an Army veteran who died at the hands of East Texas police in 2011. His father delivered an invitation: Come with me to paradise.

McCarter woke up with a song in his bones. “It was one of the most spiritual moments of my life,” he recalls. It was up to him, he knew, to rise above injustice, and to perform in a way that lifted up those around him as well. To make Con Brio’s music a place of serenity, compassion — even euphoria — right here on earth.

Paradise, which saw the San Francisco band teaming with legendary producer Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys, Beck, Seu Jorge), is the result: a declaration of independence you can dance to; an assertion of what can happen when the human spirit is truly free.

Formed in 2013, Con Brio is the offspring of seven musicians with diverse backgrounds but a shared love for the vibrant Bay Area funk and psychedelic-soul sound pioneered by groups like Sly & the Family Stone.

By 2015, when the band self-produced their debut EP, Kiss the Sun, Con Brio had already become a West Coast institution on the strength of their magnetic live show, with McCarter’s swiveling hips, splits and backflips earning him frequent comparisons to a young Michael Jackson or James Brown.

After a busy 2015 spent touring the U.S. and Europe, playing alongside veterans Galactic and Fishbone, and racking up critical acclaim on proving grounds like Austin City Limits — where PopMatters declared Con Brio “the best new live band in America” — they headed home to parlay their momentum, chemistry and tight live sound into a full-length record.

In an era when much has been made of the “death of the album,” there’s no question that Paradise; released July 15th, is a fully-formed journey — a trip made all the more immersive by Caldato’s raw, live style of production. “We tried to create a narrative in the studio, in the same way that we segue between songs live,” explains McCarter of the record’s arc.

From the first primal wail of Benjamin Andrews’ electric guitar on the title track — Paradise is bookended by intro and outro versions — the album tells a story about modern life through its contradictions: “Liftoff” speaks of an urge to fly, to transcend the day-to-day with a starry, bird’s-eye view. “Hard Times” brings us crashing back to earth with the struggles of city life, inequality, and a fractured society desperate for healing. “Money” is a revolution, a rejection of societal pressure to equate success with a paycheck and abandon one’s dreams in the process.

“Free & Brave,” the band’s most overtly political anthem, is also arguably its most infectious. Over a driving R&B groove courtesy of veteran rhythm section Jonathan Kirchner and Andrew Laubacher (bass and drums), McCarter name-checks Trayvon Martin and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Clearly inspired by his own personal relationship with police brutality, the song is equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful.

“‘Free & Brave’ is in part a response to the Black Lives Matter movement, but it was also created to serve as a reminder — to myself and to whoever finds joy in that song — that there is a light there. We don’t have to get bogged down, we don’t have to feel helpless,” says McCarter. “We might not see it on a daily basis, but we are still ‘the land of the free and home of the brave’…I still take pride in that, in what pieces of joy and happiness we can create here with our actions.”

Of course, songs about love and passion remain Con Brio’s native tongue. (At a recent Australian festival in which the band shared a bill with D’Angelo, one journalist told McCarter his sex appeal had eclipsed that of his longtime idol. McCarter continues to have no comment.) So it’s a refreshing surprise that the strongest love song on Paradise, in fact, is “Honey,” a sweet, spacious and vulnerable tune that allows the band’s horn section, Brendan Liu and Marcus Stephens, to shine. Though the band’s built a reputation on sonic bravado, it’s choices like these — moments in which the music’s power flows from its subtlety — that truly highlight where Con Brio is going.

In the second half of 2016, Con Brio embarked on an ambitious international touring schedule, including stops at the lion’s share of major American music festivals (Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Summerfest and San Francisco’s own Outside Lands); Fuji Rock, Japan’s largest annual music event; Montreal Jazz Fest, the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, the Netherlands; London; Paris; with many more international dates to come throughout the year.

Which is not to say they’re intimidated. After performing most of these songs live throughout the past year, the team is running on adrenaline, and they’re thrilled to finally put this record in people’s hands. To bring old fans along for the journey, to help new fans lose themselves in a beat or a message. To spread music that, hopefully, shakes away the daily grind — and nurtures listeners’ dreams about what their version of paradise on earth might look like, even for the duration of a song.

Ziek McCarter already knows what his looks like, because Con Brio’s building it. And from where he’s sitting, they’re well past ready for liftoff.

“We don’t want to walk, we don’t want to drive,” he says with a laugh. “We want to fly. We want to levitate.”

A Margaret Ferguson Book

Born in the early ‘50s as the youngest child of whimsical parents, Corabel Alexander Shofner was raised in a family of judges, farmers, and colorful women.

Brought up amidst formal tea parties and debutante balls of Jackson as well as the conflicting world of her wild Delta grandmother—who flew in the face of all convention—Corabel never learned to navigate the world of alcoholism, delusions of grandeur, and blatant paradoxes of her childhood. Somehow she missed the import of the civil rights movement which was happening right under her nose—in the middle of the social upheaval, at the age of 17, she simply hitchhiked away. After traveling around the world she landed in Manhattan, the first restful place she ever lived.

In the late ‘70s, after dating every single person in New York City, she enrolled in Columbia University and, though she had been a dismal student, a bright yellow window opened in her mind. She graduated with honors (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) after studying English Literature and Arabic.

She met and married a wonderful architect, Martin Shofner, who loved her exactly as she was. They moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she did well at the Vanderbilt University School of Law and reentered (more or less) “proper” society. She and Martin have three children. She likes to say that she took her retirement first and that is why she loves her ordinary life in the suburbs: she knows she’s not missing a damn thing.

She’s pleased to report that her first novel is forthcoming from Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, and her shorter work has appeared or is forthcoming in Word Riot, Willow Review Habersham Review, Hawai’i Review, Sou’wester, South Carolina Review, South Dakota Review, and Xavier Review.

Fierce Kingdom

An electrifying novel about the primal and unyielding bond between a mother and her son, and the lengths she’ll go to protect him. The zoo is nearly empty as Joan and her four-year-old son soak up the last few moments of playtime. They are happy, and the day has been close to perfect. And for the next three hours—the entire scope of the novel—she keeps on running. CNN’s New Day Co-Anchor ALISYN CAMEROTA joined host Janeane Bernstein to talk about her charming debut novel AMANDA WAKES UP!

LISTEN TO THE SHOW HERE!

From Alisyn Camerota, co-anchor of CNN’s New Day, comes a wickedly funny debut novel about a bootstrapping young reporter who lands her dream job—only to find her life turned upside down. Camerota wrote AMANDA WAKES UP as an outlet to process issues in her own life, such as the role of the media, the changing landscape of cable news, what “truth” is, and the daily struggles of journalists to get it right in a ratings-driven climate.

As a veteran broadcast journalist and the co-anchor of CNN’s New Day, Alisyn Camerota knows a little something about the fast-paced world of cable news. In her delightfully charming debut novel AMANDA WAKES UP, she offers a fictional behind-the-scenes peek at this one-of-a-kind job—a blur of breaking news, big scoops, and colorful personalities.

The book follows Amanda Gallo, an ambitious young reporter who lands a plum gig at a big-time cable news station, FAIR News, but quickly learns her dream job isn’t exactly a dream. Amanda is a smart, plucky, and idealistic heroine whose struggle to balance her personal and professional lives is infinitely relatable—even if you don’t have a 3:00 AM wake-up call. She quickly learns that though her new gig means a fancy salary and a clothing budget, she must juggle an exhausting routine, newfound stardom (and the social media firestorms that come with it), and a pompous womanizing co-anchor—not to mention deeper struggles about her own identity, what it means to be a good journalist, and how to ensure fair and objective reporting.

Alisyn Camerota discusses:

· What inspired her to write about the fast-paced world of cable news

· Her own journey as a broadcast journalist

· What it’s really like to cover a political campaign

· How she grapples with serious issues like fairness and integrity in news, and how to get the story right in a ratings-driven climate

AMANDA WAKES UP is The Devil Wears Prada meets The Newsroom, with a dash of Primary Colors, and sure to be one of the summer’s must-reads.

SYLAR COVER LINKIN PARK'S "POINTS OF AUTHORITY" 100% OF THE NET PROFIT TO GO TO NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS

PURCHASE ON ITUNES OR STREAM IT ON
SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC

JULY 24, 2017 - QUEENS, NY - With the tragic and untimely passing of Chester Bennington, Sylar has released a cover of Linkin Park's "Points of Authority", with 100% of the net profit going to the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Fans can stream the song on Spotify or Apple Music, or purchase it on iTunes, here: smarturl.it/SylarPOA

Linkin Park heavily inspired lead vocalist Jayden Panesso, even mentioning that the band was his first live show during a speech at the Alternative Press Music Awards.

Panesso shares, "It's hard to even type these words right now - Rest In Peace, Chester Bennington. This is the first time where the passing from someone I didn't know personally has hit me so hard.

Linkin Park was that band I always used as an escape from reality. Their lyrics and music have always resonated strongly in my life. When I found out about Chester's passing - I was immediately sick to my stomach. It's really crazy when you look up to someone for over 16 years and then this happens.

All I can say is, I'm thankful for Chester, I'm thankful for all those words and melodies he shared with the world because I know for a fact, him and the rest of Linkin Park have touched millions and millions of hearts. Although I do feel like a massive part of my teenage years was taken away - his music and legacy will live on forever.

Much respect and love to Chester's family, and the rest of Linkin Park. You're already SO missed."

“Fun, insightful, straightforward advice that can make your family life happier.”

– KJ Dell’Antonia, New York Times Well Family columnist

"I ask three things of the books I read. I want to learn something, I want to laugh, and, when a book is really special, I get to forge a personal connection with a writer for as long as I turn the pages. Catherine Pearlman has given me all three in this book, and much more. She’s given me a resource I will refer back to over and over again, both as a writer and a parent."

– Jessica Lahey, Author, New York Times bestseller The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed

About IGNORE IT!

Kids have an uncanny knack for knowing the exact combination of actions necessary to drive their siblings – and parents – to their knees. Whether they delight in asking “why” ad nauseum, relish the hysteria they can provoke in their sister with an imperceptible glance, or thrill at the nightly pre-bath chase, our kids know how to push our limits.

Faced with similar scenarios, many parents will resort to yelling or giving in, but it turns out these responses only make this irritating behavior worse. That’s why leading parenting expert Catherine Pearlman suggests a seemingly unconventional, yet remarkably effective approach in IGNORE IT! How Selectively Looking the Other Way Can Decrease Behavioral Problems and Increase Parenting Satisfaction (a TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale August 8, 2017).

Drawing on her own experience with her children and the success stories of her clients, Pearlman demonstrates how selectively ignoring not only relieves parents from nagging, but also allows kids to actually learn from their mistakes. In this easy-to-navigate guidebook, readers will learn:

How to eliminate problem behavior in just a few days
What behaviors are appropriate to ignore, and what to do when ignoring is not an option
How to use time-outs effectively, so they don’t become a battle of wills
How to create a reward system that actually works
What to do when mom and dad are not on the same page when it comes to discipline

An essential toolkit for frustrated, stressed-out parents, IGNORE IT! offers actionable, proven techniques that will help readers improve their kids’ behavior and put the joy back in parenting.

James Beard Award-Winning Food Writer, Laura Shapiro, Author of WHAT SHE ATE: Six Remarkable Women and the Food That Tells Their Stories, chats with host Janeane Bernstein

Laura Shapiro, Author of WHAT SHE ATE: Six Remarkable Women  and the Food That Tells Their Stories

A beloved culinary historian’s short takes on six famous women through the lens of food and cooking—what they ate and how their attitudes toward food offer surprising new insights into their lives.

LISTEN TO LAURA SHAPIRO HERE!

WHAT SHE ATE: Six Remarkable Women and the Food That Tells Their Stories by James Beard Award-winning writer Laura Shapiro is a unique account of the lives of six women from a perspective often ignored by biographers. Each woman in this entertaining group portrait was famous in her time, but until now, no one has explored their lives from the view of the kitchen and the table.

James Beard Award-Winning Food Writer

LAURA SHAPIRO

WHAT SHE ATE: Six Remarkable Women

and the Food That Tells Their Stories

Food stories can be as intimate and revealing as stories of love, work, or coming-of-age. Yet most biographers pay little attention to food, as if these great and notable figures never daydreamed about what they wanted to have for dinner or worried about what to serve their guests. Once we consider how somebody relates to food, we find a host of different and provocative ways to understand them. Everyone eats, and food touches on every aspect of our lives—social and cultural, personal and political.

Shapiro examines a lively and surprising array of women and how the theme that unites them is a powerful relationship with food:

  • Dorothy Wordsworth, whose food story transforms our understanding of the life she led with her poet brother
  • Rosa Lewis, an Edwardian-era Cockney caterer who cooked her way up the social ladder and would fit right in on Downton Abbey
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, the First Lady notorious for serving the worst food in White House history
  • Eva Braun, Hitler’s mistress who challenges our warm associations with food, family, and table, and whose last meal was famously a cyanide capsule
  • Barbara Pym, whose witty novels upend a host of stereotypes about postwar British cuisine
  • Helen Gurley Brown, the longstanding editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, whose commitment to ‘having it all’ meant having almost nothing to eat except a supersized portion of diet Jell-O

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Laura Shapiro has written on every food topic from champagne to Jell-O for The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Slate, Gourmet, and many other publications. She is the author of three classic books of culinary history. Her awards include a James Beard Journalism Award and one from the National Women’s Political Caucus. She has been a fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library, where she also co-curated the widely acclaimed exhibition Lunch Hour NYC. More recently, Shapiro was featured in Michael Pollan’s Netflix documentary series Cooked (2016).

The Book of Summer

MICHELLE GABLE

In THE BOOK OF SUMMER, New York Times Bestselling author, Michelle Gable uses the faded pages of a guest book to transport readers back in time and introduce them to the inhabitants of Cliff House, a century-old summer home. There’s Ruby Packard, a bright-eyed newlywed on the eve of World War II, her granddaughter, Bess Codman, who returns to Cliff House after years away, and Bess’s mother, a notorious town troublemaker. Due to erosion, the once grand, Nantucket-set compound will soon fall into the sea. But before it does, Bess must pack up the house and deal with her mother, who refuses to leave. In the process, Bess uncovers the tantalizing secrets housed within its aging walls.

Fans who’ve come to know Gable, who’s been called “a bright new talent in the world of women’s fiction,” for her “highly literate mysteries,”** enticing settings, and “skillful transitioning between story lines” will once again be rewarded. The title says it all: THE BOOK OF SUMMER is THE book of summer!

In her bestselling debut, A Paris Apartment, Michelle Gable fictionalized the true story of a French courtesan and the discovery of her sealed-for-seventy-years Parisian apartment, which was filled to the rafters with stunning pieces of artwork and furniture. While researching A Paris Apartment, Gable learned of the larger-than-life socialite Gladys Deacon, Duchess of Marlborough, and immediately knew she’d make her the star of what would become I’ll See You in Paris. Gable’s affection for escapist settings, blending fact and fiction, and weaving past and present story lines emerges again in her third novel, THE BOOK OF SUMMER (St. Martin’s Press).

About Michelle Gable…

New York Times bestselling author of A Paris Apartment and I’ll See You in Paris, Michelle Gable graduated from The College of William & Mary. After a twenty-year career in finance, she now writes full time. Michelle lives in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, with her husband, two daughters, a lazy cat, and one feisty bunny.

More Praise for Michelle Gable…

“This is the sort of fun, escapist read perfect for book clubs. There are characters to love, characters to hate, enticing settings and a requisite amount of plot twists. Gable is a bright new talent in the world of women’s fiction, and I’m looking forward to seeing where she takes us on her next creative journey.”

—Fort Worth Star-Telegram on I’ll See You in Paris*

“Gable’s novel provides a wonderful, highly literate mystery with the historical and engagingly eccentric figure of Gladys Deacon at its core. The plot involves stories within stories, an almost ‘Wuthering Heights’ narrative complexity. I’ll See You in Paris abounds with strength of character and ‘characters’ too.”

—The Roanoke Times**

“Gable’s Paris of today and yesteryear are worlds that are easy and pleasurable to get lost in.”

Author Bryce Hoffman joins host Janeane Bernstein Monday 7/24 at 9:15am to talk about his latest book, "Red Teaming."

LISTEN TO THE SHOW HERE!

About Red Teaming

Red Teaming is a revolutionary new way to make critical and contrarian thinking part of the planning process of any organization, allowing companies to stress-test their strategies, flush out hidden threats and missed opportunities and avoid being sandbagged by competitors.

Today, most — if not all — established corporations live with the gnawing fear that there is another Uber out there just waiting to disrupt their industry. Red Teaming is the cure for this anxiety. The term was coined by the U.S. Army, which has developed the most comprehensive and effective approach to Red Teaming in the world today in response to the debacles of its recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the roots of Red Teaming run very deep: to the Roman Catholic Church’s “Office of the Devil’s Advocate,” to the Kriegsspiel of the Prussian General Staff and to the secretive AMAN organization, Israel’s Directorate of Military Intelligence. In this book, author Bryce Hoffman shows business how to use the same techniques to better plan for the uncertainties of today’s rapidly changing economy.

Red Teaming is both a set of analytical tools and a mindset. It is designed to overcome the mental blind spots and cognitive biases that all of us fall victim to when we try to address complex problems. The same heuristics that allow us to successfully navigate life and business also cause us to miss or ignore important information. It is a simple and provable fact that we do not know what we do not know. The good news is that, through Red Teaming, we can find out.

In this book, Hoffman shows how the most innovative and disruptive companies, such as Google and Toyota, already employ some of these techniques organically. He also shows how many high-profile business failures, including those that sparked the Great Recession, could easily have been averted by using these approaches. Most importantly, he teaches leaders how to make Red Teaming part of their own planning process, laying the foundation for a movement that will change the way America does business.

Author Zinzi Clemmons talks with host Janeane Bernstein about her powerful debut novel, WHAT WE LOSE.

Named a “Writer Worth Knowing” in The New York Times Summer Book Preview

LISTEN TO ZINZI CLEMMONS HERE!

Zinzi Clemmons’ WHAT WE LOSE is a powerful and innovative debut novel that questions the nature of identity, grief, and love through the eyes of a young woman who loses her mother to cancer. Told in visceral vignettes that draw from autofiction, online media, and encyclopedia, WHAT WE LOSE is a thoughtful, poignant debut from a promising new voice.

At the beginning of the novel we meet Thandi, a second generation South African American of mixed race growing up in the Philadelphia suburbs. Thandi is raised by her South African mother, yet in Thandi’s daily life she is immersed in the culture of “American Blacks . . . my precarious homeland.” “Because of my light skin and foreign roots,” Clemmons writes, “I was never fully accepted by any race.” This feeling, of being detached from a tribe, the loneliness of a perpetual outsider, follows her throughout her life.

Her mother, a pillar of strength in their family, becomes ill while Thandi is at college, and eventually Thandi leaves school to care for her. After her mother’s death, Thandi struggles to anchor herself to a self-image and to relationships that seem increasingly tenuous to her. She falls in love and fashions an unexpected new family for herself, only to find herself uncomfortable in it—an interloper again—and still deeply disoriented by the loss of her mother.

Clemmons intersperses the narrative with photography, text messages, excerpts from blogs and newspaper articles; the effect is by turns playful and haunting. The primary sources create intimate and sprawling connections between the reader, Thandi, and the novel’s larger questions: about the construct of race, injustice within social systems, the durability of love, and the ability to overcome grief. In this way WHAT WE LOSE confronts the horrors and the legacy of Apartheid, and the tyranny of race in the personal and political realms. The meditations in WHAT WE LOSE are deeply felt, not least because its themes are informed by the author’s personal experiences.

Gaetano Morello, ND, is a board-certified naturopathic doctor practicing in West Vancouver, British Columbia and the author of Whole Body Cleansing. Dr. Morello joins Janeane 7/17 at 9:30am pst!

If you're not a bodybuilder, why would you need a protein shake? Turns out there are quite a few reasons...

Protein is used for the production of muscles and also to manufacture hormones, enzymes, cellular messengers, nucleic acids, and immune-system components. Without adequate protein our body can't put together the structures that make up every cell, tissue and organ, nor can it generate the biochemical components needed for cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, growth and healing. Without an adequate amount of protein our muscles wouldn't recover as quickly after a workout, which could lead to injuries.

“Protein powder is a great supplement for any fitness program,” says Dr. Gaetano Morello. “Protein helps you build muscle and boosts your metabolism to keep you energetic throughout the day. A faster metabolism burns more fat and helps you slim down. I take a protein shake in the morning or after a workout. It’s an easy way to get the key nutrients I need.”

Start your day with a protein shake to:
Boost metabolism
Build muscle
Promote fat loss
Increase strength
Reduce hunger

Columnist and Fitness Instructor, Jane Schmidt, joined Janeane 7/17 to talk about her laugh-out-loud book, "Not a Perfect Fit."

LISTEN TO THE SHOW HERE!

Not a Perfect Fit: Laugh-out-loud funny one minute and thought-provoking the next, Not a Perfect Fit includes stories detailing everything from Jane Schmidt’s experience living off-grid as the only English woman in an Amish neighborhood to family trips that are remarkably similar to National Lampoon’s Vacation. Through it all, Schmidt manages to rise above the many challenges she faces, inspiring and entertaining her audience along the way. Filled with animal antics, gratitude, mishaps, and madcap adventures, Not a Perfect Fit’ s tell-all, single-girl-gone country, down-home stories give readers permission to laugh and cry—and, most important, to carry on.

JANE A. SCHMIDT is a columnist and the owner of two businesses, Fitness Choices and Turtle Adventures. When not teaching her fitness classes or encouraging women to get outside, she spends her time backpacking in places like the Grand Canyon, Superior Hiking Trail, and Isle Royale National Park; biking across Wisconsin; hiking and kayaking in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve; or just hanging out with her animal family in rural Viola, Wisconsin.
"Jane exudes an innocence in her presentation of life that made me want to meet her and see the world through her eyes. She had me laughing and commiserating, shocked and envious, all at once. Definitely a fun read, and I would recommend this book to all, without any hesitation."
―Readers' Favorite, 5 stars

“Jane Schmidt documents the essential day-to-day of rural Wisconsin life with a deft balance of sentiment, reportage, and humor. City mouse, country mouse, newcomer or old-timer, you will find yourself nodding, grinning, and sometimes dabbing at your eyes as you read these stories."
―Michael Perry, best-selling author of Truck: A Love Story and The Jesus Cow

"In daring to share herself fully with the reader through these funny and heart-felt stories of country life, Jane Schmidt helps us laugh out loud into that sometimes heart-breaking gap between our dreams and realities, and between what we hope is true about ourselves and what actually is. Whether you live out in the country or in the big city, Not a Perfect Fit is a gift of laughter, vulnerability, and wisdom."
―Jennifer Morales, award-winning author of Meet Me Halfway

“Jane Schmidt is funny, candid, and has the keen eye of an outsider looking in―then turning the mirror back on herself. Reading the final pages felt like the last miles of a road trip with someone whose company you really enjoyed that has ended far too soon."
―Julie Buckles, author of Paddling to Winter

“With humor, grace, and tenderness, Jane Schmidt gives her readers an entertaining peek into the layered life of a single mother, animal hoarder, and kick-ass fitness instructor―living a rustic life but still searching for the perfect wand of mascara and a respectable pair of jeans.”
―Sheila Sherwin, writer and editor of RealSmallTowns.com

Ronald Rael, author of Borderwall as Architecture: A Manifesto for the US-Mexico Boundary, joined Janeane 7/17 on KUCI 88.9fm!

LISTEN TO THE SHOW HERE!
"Part historical account, part theoretical appraisal, and part design manifesto, Borderwall as Architecture is reminiscent of Rem Koolhaas’ Delirious New York in its sweeping assessment of
both the sociocultural peculiarities and outlandish possibilities represented by a prominent structural element."—Blaine Brownell, Architect Magazine

Borderwall as Architecture is an artistic and intellectual hand grenade of a book, and a timely re-examination of what the physical barrier that divides the United States of America from the United Mexican States is and could be. It is both a protest against the wall and a projection about its future. Through a series of propositions suggesting that the nearly seven hundred miles of wall is an opportunity for economic and social development along the border that encourages its conceptual and physical dismantling, the book takes readers on a journey along a wall that cuts through a “third nation”—the Divided States of America. On the way the transformative effects of the wall on people, animals, and the natural and built landscape are exposed and interrogated through the story of people who, on both sides of the border, transform the wall, challenging its existence in remarkably creative ways. Coupled with these real-life accounts are counterproposals for the wall, created by Rael’s studio, that reimagine, hyperbolize, or question the wall and its construction, cost, performance, and meaning. Rael proposes that despite the intended use of the wall, which is to keep people out and away, the wall is instead an attractor, engaging both sides in a common dialogue.

Included is a collection of reflections on the wall and its consequences by leading experts Michael Dear, Norma Iglesias-Prieto, Marcello Di Cintio, and Teddy Cruz.

Ronald Rael is Associate Professor in the departments of Architecture and Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of Earth Architecture, a history of building with earth in the modern era that exemplifies new, creative uses of the oldest building material on the planet. The Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum have recognized his work, and in 2014 his creative practice, Rael San Fratello, was named an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League of New York.

5 Reasons to Join the Slime Craze this Summer – Lessons from sslimegirls

If you’ve been looking for Elmer’s glue at your local Target or Michael’s and the shelves have been empty, well, I can tell you where all the glue went. Can’t find Borax either? Yup. I know where that is, too. How do I know? Because it’s all at MY HOUSE! We have suddenly turned into a thriving slime business thanks to my daughter, aka sslimegirls. And I am here to say that Slime 2.0 is badass! From the colorful and creative possibilities to the captivating smells, today’s slimes will make you feel like a creative super hero.

1. You will be happier taking a technology break and having old school fun!

I consider myself to be an incredibly lucky parent. Why? Because instead of spending her time watching TV, perusing YouTube videos, taking endless selfies or doing who knows what else, my daughter has caught on to the resurgence of slime and she’s kicked it up a notch. But this slime is not even close to the original gooey, green stuff I remember as a kid. The original Slime, created by Mattel and sold in mini plastic trash cans, was a green drippy, oozy slippery gel that creeped between your fingers, like some old ‘60s horror movie. Let’s just say, I wasn’t a huge fan, but the 2017 version of slime is anything but plain, gooey green. Anything goes when it comes to what my daughter can create and imagine with texture, color and smells. Now, I am witnessing slime 2.0 daily. Our house is a slime lab, and I must say it’s off the charts wildly creative!

I’ve seen my daughter blossom into a chemist, a no-recipe, go with- the-flow innovator, who thrives on bringing her own personal creativity to the development of new and interesting slimes with varying consistencies, smells and colors. Sslimegirls is gaining followers and growing rapidly in a competitive slime business. Kids across the country are making slime videos and posting their colorful creations. If you haven’t noticed, Elmer’s glue is now promoting their gallon-sized products featuring adorable kids creating slime in an array of vibrant colors. Slime is back again, and in full force!

2. You can be wildly creative and unique

On a Saturday night, you can find my daughter creating a huge tub of slime alone or with a friend, and enjoying the thrill of creativity and good old-fashioned, han
ds on play. She might also be making a slime video or packaging up items to ship out to a new customer. Instead of being boy crazy (Phew!), she’s slime crazy! Her drive to create new and unique slimes, and purchase other kids’ slimes, quickly influenced her to start her own business with a friend. They called it sslimegirls, and even though her friend left the business to focus on school, the original name is still going strong.

3. Creating a slime business teaches life-long lessons

Some might ask, “What is there to learn from creating a thriving slime business?” Considering the endless amounts of glue and other supplies we were buying, I seized this opportunity and helped turn my daughter’s passion into a learning experience. She logs all her expenses, from supplies and shipping costs, and tracks her sales diligently. She now understands that we can’t just keep on creating product, and buying gallon sized containers of Elmer’s glue, unless there is a demand for what she is making.

Plus, she has learned how important it is to treat her customers with kindness and respect, and the power of video marketing and product packaging. The packages she receives from other slime sellers across the country, include beautifully handwritten notes and extra perks, such as candy, stickers and toys. She has made mental notes on what to do and not do when it comes to marketing, promotion and building a customer base. I finally gave sslimegirls a designated area and shelving unit in the laundry room, because slime was taking over the dining room (and it wasn’t pretty). Being organized and keeping tabs on your supplies and inventory is an important part of sslimegirls, and any business.

4. Writing letters, the way people used to (in the dark ages), before there was email and texting is more exciting than you think!

When I see my daughter sprinting with excitement to the mailbox to see if any slime packages have arrived, I think back to my days running for the mail, too (except I was trying to intercept my school grades before my father saw my D’s). I would be just as excited at her age to have packages showing up at my doorstep. The handwritten notes she receives are reminiscent of my days having pen pals or just writing letters to camp friends throughout the year. How many kids do you know who write letters anymore?! Probably not many, because most kids send texts and emails at most.

I can feel my daughter’s excitement as she receives slime packages, thoughtful handwritten notes, candy and small ‘squishy’ toys. She carefully reviews products for free and posts her reviews on Instagram, which has become a booming hub of slime excitement and creativity. If a slime shipment arrives and the contents are not carefully sealed, she receives an oozing mess. From these shipping mishaps, my daughter has learned what not to do, and how to improve her business image and product. Sslimegirls sells her slime online through her Etsy store  and markets, sells and reviews slimes on her sslimegirls Instagram account. Her products now include beautiful packaging, adorable logo labels, handwritten thank you notes to the buyer, and of course, extra perks like candy and a small squishy toy.

5. Bridge the gap between your kids and senior citizens…with slime!

Incidentally, the biggest learning moment from all of this slime creation is that slime is not just for kids. That’s right. You heard me correctly.

I am not talking about adults taking a monetary interest in slime, because there are adults making and selling, as well. I am going one step further. And here’s how we proved our point. We introduced six different slimes to our 98-year-old friend, Hanna, and here was her reaction: pure joy, playfulness, creativity, excitement, and an opportunity to get her fingers moving, because she has arthritis. Hanna was completely surprised at just how much fun she was having and how interesting slime was. Sslimegirls made her day and we had even more to talk about while playing together with slime.

We make it a rule to never be on our phones when we are with Hanna. There is no reason to be, unless we are sharing some photos with her. As a society spending most of our time heads down into our electronic devices, many people don’t know how to interact and converse anymore. We are too distracted, too hooked on technology and less focused on what really matters: the real moments right in front of us. There is no replacement for quality time and meaningful connections. And we don’t need to capture every moment on our phones. Let’s just imprint them in our minds and hearts.

Creativity bridges any age gap and starts a conversation. Put your cell phones down and reconnect on a personal level. Lastly, never underestimate the creative mind and spirit of a really clever
98-year-old.

Want to make your own slime?
Here’s how from sslimegirls!
