Author Susan Meissner joined Janeane to talk about her new historical fiction novel AS BRIGHT AS HEAVEN

LISTEN to today's conversation with author Susan Meissner!

About As Bright as Heaven

From the acclaimed author of Secrets of a Charmed Life and A Bridge Across the Ocean comes a new novel set in Philadelphia during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, which tells the story of a family reborn through loss and love.

In 1918, Philadelphia was a city teeming with promise. Even as its young men went off to fight in the Great War, there were opportunities for a fresh start on its cobblestone streets. Into this bustling town, came Pauline Bright and her husband, filled with hope that they could now give their three daughters–Evelyn, Maggie, and Willa–a chance at a better life.

But just months after they arrive, the Spanish Flu reaches the shores of America. As the pandemic claims more than twelve thousand victims in their adopted city, they find their lives left with a world that looks nothing like the one they knew. But even as they lose loved ones, they take in a baby orphaned by the disease who becomes their single source of hope. Amidst the tragedy and challenges, they learn what they cannot live without–and what they are willing to do about it.

As Bright as Heaven is the compelling story of a mother and her daughters who find themselves in a harsh world not of their making, which will either crush their resolve to survive or purify it.

Daphne Maxwell Reid, an iconic TV mom of the 1990s, from her three seasons as Aunt Vivian on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" joined Janeane Monday 2/6/18 at 9:30am pst

LISTEN to today's show with Daphne Maxwell Reid!

Everyone remembers Daphne Maxwell Reid as an iconic TV mom of the 1990s, from her three seasons as Aunt Vivian on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” These days Reid is a Renaissance woman, respected artist and designer, and education activist. Working from her home in Virginia, and still happily married to pioneering television actor/producer/writer/director Tim Reid (“WKRP in Cincinnati,” “Frank’s Place”), Daphne Maxwell Reid is living proof that a passion for creativity and a dedication to hard work can ensure a lifetime’s worth of success.

Breaking new barriers is nothing new to Reid, who decades ago became the first African-American homecoming queen at Northwestern University and shortly thereafter the first woman of color to appear on the cover of Glamour magazine. But many fans of her modeling and acting career probably don’t know that Reid is a lifelong shutterbug, a hobby passed down by her father that has now become a focal point of her career. With five books and 5 annual calendars already published, Reid specializes in fine art photography that features doors and doorways from around the world, including Cuba, Venice, France, China, Germany, and Belgium.

Now she’s added to her publishing resume with her first cookbook, “Grace + Soul & Motherwit,” which offers her favorite recipes spiced with personal memories and reflections from her life and travels.

Reid has also been a seamstress for much of her life, creating many of her own outfits and costumes as a young actress and model, and has now developed those skills into an exclusive, custom clothing line called Daphne Style, making Chinese silk brocade jackets that are wearable works of art. She also keeps busy as the Host of Virginia Currents (PBS), and as a spokesperson for Virginia State University, a historically black college/university (HBCU), doing outreach, public relations, and speaking engagements that allow her to preach the importance of education and career prep for students of color.

A thoughtful, inspiring, and fascinating professional with over five decades of experience, Daphne Maxwell Reid continues to demonstrate that mastering a new skill is always possible for an artist with a generous spirit and self-determination.

DAPHNE MAXWELL REID

Biography

You wouldn’t blame someone with a lifetime of success as a performer to take it easy in their later years, restricting their efforts to the occasional fun gig or reunion appearance. But that’s not Daphne Maxwell Reid, who continues to thrive as a creative entrepreneur and artist, continuing to dazzle anyone who knows her with her bold spirit, grace, and work ethic. The first woman of color to make the cover of Glamour magazine and one of television history’s most beloved sitcom moms, Reid now balances her acting gigs with her work as a photographic artist, clothing designer, and education activist, demonstrating that it’s never too late to pursue new passions and find new opportunities.

When she attended Northwestern University a half-century ago, Daphne Maxwell became the prestigious school’s first African-American homecoming queen; but that was just the first of many barriers that Maxwell broke in her career, arriving into the industry at just the right moment as a new perspective on race was emerging in the wake of the civil rights movement. “Being among the first of a few black women to work in popular television reminds me that one doesn’t choose to be a pioneer,” she says today. “One does what comes next in their journey, and sometimes you happen to be the first to do it. I just happened to land in that slot of being first for some things – but being the first doesn’t mean anything if it doesn’t seed the growth of a lot more. I’m pleased that my seed bore fruit, and now there are so many more black homecoming queens and cover models and actresses in popular entertainment.”

Reid’s creative journey began as a child in the Bronx. “I grew up knowing that I could be anything I wanted to be, but I also learned the joy and responsibility of working.” Her father had studied photography, and passed on his love of the medium to young Daphne, who had her first Brownie camera before the age of ten. “We always had cameras in the house,” she remembers, and her father’s passion for the photographic image is something that she would carry with her throughout her life.

But first, she worked as a model, parlaying her success in that field into an acting career that found her on dozens of television series in the 1980s. With guest starring roles in shows like “WKRP in Cincinnati” (where she first worked with her husband, Tim Reid, to whom she has been married since 1982), “Hill Street Blues,” and “Simon and Simon,” she first took a lead role on the acclaimed series “Frank’s Place,” opposite Tim. But it was in the role of Vivian Banks in the last three seasons of “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” with Will Smith that endeared Reid to a new generation of fans. “I’m honored that I was able to be one of those pioneers of 80s television, and maintain my integrity and play a wide variety of roles,” she says today. “If I am considered a role model, I would like those who are seeking to emulate me to make sure that they live their lives with integrity and joy.”

Now residing with her husband in Virginia, Reid has turned in recent years to her lifelong passion for fashion and photography. As a young actress and model, Reid often made her own outfits and wardrobe (“I’ve been sewing since I was nine,” she says). At a certain point, friends would say that they wished they could wear Reid’s outfits, so she started making pieces for her friends. “I have to do it in limited design, because I consider it wearable art,” she explains. “The price is high, there is limited access so I don’t get overwhelmed, and I want these to be personal projects, not mass manufactured.” Of particular pride are her designs for Chinese-inspired jackets that are bold, colorful, and versatile, and easily adaptable to different body sizes and types. Her line (Daphne Style) wowed audiences at New York’s fashion week in 2017, and is featured on her website daphnemaxwellreid.com.

Perhaps even more notable is Reid’s photographic work (featured in the “Fresh Prints” portion of her website); in particular, Reid’s specialty is taking picture of interesting doors all around the world. “It was about ten years ago, in sharing some of my travel pictures with friends, that they encouraged me to make art out of them,” she recalls. “I woke up on my 60th birthday, and I said to myself, ‘I am a photographic artist,’ and I spent the last decade figuring out what that means.” Discovering her affinity for doors has been part of that process. “I see the doors as a metaphor for life,” she explains. “The journey of doors is something that I like to preach to young people; every choice you make leads you through a door on an adventure, on a new journey, on a learning trip.” In the form of postcards, printed collections, and gallery exhibitions, Reid’s vibrant, compelling prints catalog some of her journeys through Europe and Cuba.

Ultimately, Reid’s life is a testament to the power of learning – whether it was learning passion from her father, or attending university, or teaching herself new careers. It’s no wonder that she extends that experience to others in the form of working with Virginia State University, one of the nation’s leading HBCUs (historically black college/universities). “I encourage the schools I work with to make sure that the education the students are receiving is of value in the current economy,” she says, “and to make sure that they learn the basics of how to think and process information, how to go to an original source – teaching people how to think is far more important than teaching them how to memorize facts.” A member of the board of VSU for eight years, Reid has hosted in informational videos documenting campus life and faculty achievements, and made public appearances on behalf of the institution. “Part of my contribution was to use my celebrity to make sure we connect with alumni and increase the school’s reputation,” she adds, noting that for HBCUs, demonstrating the intellectual and vocational value of higher education to their future students is a crucial need.

Throughout her many activities and endeavors, Reid continues to be supported by her husband, himself a television pioneer as an actor, writer, director, and producer. “It’s so exciting to be married to someone who dreams as big as he does,” she beams. “I’m proud of being his spouse, and proud of the energy he gives me to follow my dreams.” That partnership and her lifelong passion for hard work and achievement is summed up what Reid hopes her work conveys to her audience. “You always have to contribute to owning your own power. You have to be in control of your essence. You decide how it is shared, where it is shared, and how you want to be remembered by each step that you take. Having self-confidence then gives you the power to make good choices.”

The book follows the story of skip tracer Jamie and her bulldog, Deuce, as Jaime tries to uncover the mystery behind her niece's disappearance. Unfortunately for Jamie, that means she has to confront family tension that she swore never to get involved with again. The book takes a fascinating look at family relationships as it weaves to the end in fast-paced-mystery style.

The book is set in a fictionalized version of Port Aransas, TX, a place where Laura spends a lot of time with her family, which was hit very hard by Hurricane Harvey.

In an interview, Laura will talk about:
  • Port Aransas, how it relates to her fictionalized Port Alene, TX, and how her experiences there shaped the novel
  • Transitioning from photojournalism to novel writing
  • Writing about complex family relationships
  • Becoming a finalist for the Claymore Award and publishing her debut novel

    Description

Jamie Rush understands what it takes to disappear because her parents taught her that skill long ago. Leveraging her knowledge of why and how people run from their own lives, Jamie has built a business based on bringing those in hiding back to answer for their actions.

When her estranged brother, Brian, calls and says his daughter is missing, Jaime initially turns down the case. Kristen has always been a bit wild, frequently dropping off the grid then showing up a few days later. But Brian swears this time is different, and even though Jamie vowed years ago to keep her conniving sibling at arm’s length, she can’t walk away if Kristen could be in real trouble.

As Jamie begins digging into Kristen’s life, she uncovers her niece’s most guarded secrets. Searching for the truth will put a target on Jamie’s back and endanger the lives of those she love.

2/20/18 - National Geographic writer, Daniel Stone, shares the true adventures of David Fairchild in his new book, The Food Explorer - The True Adventures of the Globe-Trotting Botanist who Transformed What America Eats

Listen to today's featured guest, Daniel Stone!

DANIEL STONE
National Geographic writer shares the true adventures of David Fairchild, a late-nineteenth-century food explorer who traveled the globe and introduced diverse crops like avocados, mangoes, seedless grapes--and thousands more--to the American plate

ABOUT THE BOOK
In the nineteenth century, American meals were about subsistence, not enjoyment. But as a new century approached, appetites broadened, and David Fairchild, a young botanist with an insatiable lust to explore and experience the world, set out in search of foods that would enrich the American farmer and enchant the American eater. Daniel Stone, a staff writer for National Geographic, shares this little known story in his new book, The Food Explorer: The True Adventures of a Globetrotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats. Stone takes readers on David Fairchild’s exciting culinary journey, from Java to Baghdad, Corsica and Bavaria, and many stops in between. Along the way, Fairchild was arrested, caught diseases, and bargained with island tribes. He also found love marrying Marian Bell, the daughter of Alexander Graham Bell. But his culinary ambition came during a formative era, and through him, America transformed into the most diverse food system ever created.

Daniel Stone shares some of the things that Fairchild introduced to America, including:

· Avocados, which he brought from Chile

· Kale, the superfood of our time, which began as low-class food in Croatia

· The Meyer lemon and Florida’s famous oranges, which originated in China.

· Egyptian cotton, a botanical creation in Egypt as a result of America’s Civil War.

· The cherry blossom tree from Japan, which has forever brightened America’s capital.

· Mangoes, of which Fairchild collected more than 30 varieties, some still growing today.

With stories taken directly from Fairchild’s unpublished journals and letters, as well as never-before-seen photographs from remote parts of the world, THE FOOD EXPLORER is as rich and satisfying as a ripe Georgia peach (which, by the way, came from China).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Daniel Stone is a staff writer for National Geographic and a former White House correspondent for Newsweek and The Daily Beast. A native of Los Angeles, he holds degrees from UC Davis and John Hopkins University.

ABOUT BROOKE FENN
Brooke Fenn is a 36 year old Single Mom of 2, and lover of Jesus. She was an Interior Designer for 15 years, and spent the last 7 doing it at a corporate level. This past October, when her Father and Business Partner discovered AR Workshop in Arizona, he immediately knew this was what she should be doing. God moved Mountains and even though she just discovered the Company in October with the help of her amazing Family and Friends she opened AR Workshop San Juan Capistrano on December 7th.
https://www.arworkshop.com/sanjuancapistrano/

FROM BROOKE
AR Workshop on a national level wanted to celebrate National Random Acts of Kindness Day. With all the tragedy going on and specifically in our little bubble of South Orange County, we wanted to make it a week, not just a day. Our community needs a little joy, and Blazes Family have set an amazing example of how to react to tragedy, it inspired us. So February 15th we began our Random Act of Kindness week. Each day encouraging our community to go out and be kind, and spread the love. We strongly felt the recent Deaths of Blaze, Kyle Escobar, Patrick Turner, and Emma Pangelinan were huge places kindness and joy needed to be sprinkled. We wanted to Honor these lives by encouraging others to do kind acts in their Honor. We wanted to celebrate those doing it with a free evening in our Workshop. Friday we lured Saralyn Wolf by making her think she was picking up a sign for Blaze's Family (which she was), but we also wanted to acknowledge her service to the Bernstein Family by Moderating Blaze's Remembrance Page, by gifting her an evening in our Workshop. We hope to be made aware of other good doings being done for the Escobar, Turner & Pangelians Families so we can gift them as well.

2/19/18 - 9:45am pst - Down the Up Staircase Three Generations of a Harlem Family Bruce D. Haynes and Syma Solovitch Columbia University Press

Listen to today's show featuring author Bruce D. Haynes!

Down the Up Staircase tells the story of one Harlem family across three generations, connecting its journey to the historical and social forces that transformed Harlem over the past century. Bruce D. Haynes and Syma Solovitch capture the tides of change that pushed blacks forward through the twentieth century—the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, the early civil rights victories, the Black Power and Black Arts movements—as well as the many forces that ravaged black communities, including Haynes's own. As an authority on race and urban communities, Haynes brings unique sociological insights to the American mobility saga and the tenuous nature of status and success among the black middle class.

In many ways, Haynes's family defied the odds. All four great-grandparents on his father's side owned land in the South as early as 1880. His grandfather, George Edmund Haynes, was the founder of the National Urban League and a protégé of eminent black sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois; his grandmother, Elizabeth Ross Haynes, was a noted children's author of the Harlem Renaissance and a prominent social scientist. Yet these early advances and gains provided little anchor to the succeeding generations. This story is told against the backdrop of a crumbling three-story brownstone in Sugar Hill that once hosted Harlem Renaissance elites and later became an embodiment of the family's rise and demise. Down the Up Staircase is a stirring portrait of this family, each generation walking a tightrope, one misstep from free fall.
About the Authors
Bruce D. Haynes is professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Davis. He is the author of Red Lines, Black Spaces: The Politics of Race and Space in a Black Middle-Class Suburb (2001) and the coeditor of The Ghetto: Contemporary Global Issues and Controversies (2011).

Syma Solovitch is a freelance writer, developmental editor, and educator. This is her first book.

We are: Fanny Walked The Earth

Jean (Millington) Adamian - bass and vocals

June Millington - guitar and vocals

Brie Darling - drums and vocals.

Fanny Walked The Earth is the most recent incarnation of Fanny, an amalgam of several early all girl bands in the mid to late 1960’s: The Svelts, the California Girls and the Freudian Slips from northern California, and later, the Women, from Iowa.

The new, 13 song, self titled record is a combination of songs written by us, both individually and together. The songs and the recording speaks of our pioneering musical history covering uncharted territory, the bond of being part of the small rambling female tribe, starting a long climb up a tall ladder. Of girls turning into women, living life, playing music, surviving, persisting and women coming together in support of each other, paying it forward …and continuing the climb.

On board with us on our new record, are members of other girl groups from 1964 to current times. We are honored to be joined by ‘all girl band’ members of Goldie and The Gingerbreads, The Pleasure Seekers, Birtha, The Runaways, The Go Gos, The Bangles, Fanny, American Girls…and then some. These women musician/singers, spanning 50 years, some very familiar, some hardly recognized, are all part of our history as we are part of theirs.

The record Fanny Walked The Earth is set for release on Blue Elan records in early 2018.

60’s

In Sacramento, At 16 and 17 years old, Jean and June met Brie, 16, (from the small neighboring town of Folsom) in search of a replacement drummer for their all girl band, the Svelts. It didn’t seem likely that they would find another girl drummer. There weren’t many girl musicians or girl bands in 1966.

All 3 girls were of the same heritage with Filipina mothers and European fathers. At the time, none of them realized how special this teaming up would be.

Led by June, the band(s) broke up, and reformed a few times. Playing gigs until she was 6 months pregnant, Brie left the band in 1968, giving birth to her daughter at 18. The band, then a foursome, with Alice DeBuhr on drums, made their way to Los Angeles in 1969 working their way to signing as the first all girl band to record a full LP on a major label. For a short time in Los Angeles, baby in tow, Brie rejoined the band as lead singer. Management decided to pursue a female fab 4 image, Brie left the band. All remained friends and housemates.

70’s

Nicky Barclay joined on keyboards & vocals, and the band was renamed Fanny. From 1969 to 1974, after making 4 albums and touring the world, June and Alice left the band.

Brie rejoined Jean and Nicky with Patti Quatro on guitar & vocals, to record the last Fanny Album in 1974. After touring the U.S. to support the record, Brie left the band.

Late 70’s -80’s

June, Jean and Brie, with keyboardist/singer from the Svelts days, Wendy Haas united to form Fanny All Stars. This incarnation, and one more in the 1980’s was short lived and did not record.

1999

In a year 2000 interview with Rolling Stone, Fanny fan David Bowie said:

One of the most important bands in America rock has been buried without a trace. And that is Fanny.

They were one of the finest…rock bands of their time, in about 1973. They were extraordinary: They wrote everything, they played like motherfuckers, they were just colossal and wonderful. They’re as important as anybody else who’s ever been, ever; it just wasn’t their time. Revivify Fanny. And I will feel that my work is done. — David Bowie

BRIE

After going their separate ways, Brie continued a career as a working musician/singer, a songwriter and recording artist, signing record deals with the original bands, American Girls (IRS early 1980’s) and Boxing Gandhis (Mesa Blue Moon & Atlantic Records mid 1990’s). She toured, recorded with and appeared in videos during a 40 year span with: Carole King, Jimmy Buffet, Rodger Daltrey, Ringo Starr, Robert Palmer, Nikki Sixx, ELO, Robbie Nevil, and many more. In 1993, she and Producer & Boxing Gandhis bandmate, Dave Darling married. As a songwriter, Brie has written songs covered by The Pointer Sisters, Peter Criss (Kiss), Randy Crawford and Michael Jackson (unreleased).

JEAN

In 1978 Jean married guitarist Earl Slick, who she met thru her friend David Bowie. She continued to record and perform with June, mostly focusing on raising Slick’s and her 2 children. Jean sang background vocals on David Bowie’s record “Fame”. She was ‘the glue’ having never left the group(s) and remained part of every incarnation of the band. The song “Butter Boy”, a top 40 hit in 1974 was written and sung by Jean.

JUNE

June continued to record as a solo artist and with her sister Jean, producing albums over the next few years. Deeply committed to the growing women’s movement, she also toured with and produced albums for women recording artists. With her partner, Ann Hackler, June co-founded the Institute for Musical Arts in 1987, a non profit school, guiding girls and young women as the future generations of women musicians. 2015 saw the publication of her autobiography Land of a Thousand Bridges. She is currently writing the sequel to her book.

2016

Jean, June and Brie continued their separate lives and careers, staying in touch, but not playing together again for over 30 years.

Fast forward to 2016: June reached out to Brie, asking if she would like to join her and Jean to perform a short Fanny set as part of a Tribute that was being paid to her for her achievements and contributions as a pioneering female musician, teacher & author.

This joining was a reawakening of how good it felt and sounded to play together… it was automatic.

Brie posted a short (18 second) video clip of the ‘live’ tribute performance of Hey Bulldog on Facebook. The clip was seen by Kirk Pashich, president of Blue Elan Records. Brie’s husband Dave Darling, who had produced several artists for Blue Elan Records, presented the concept of making a new record to Kirk.

Signing the record deal, with the moniker of Fanny Walked The Earth, Jean, Brie and June reunited over the course of one year to write and record 13 original songs.

Author Caroline Taylor joined host Janeane to discuss her latest book, Loose Ends

Caroline Taylor's book, “Loose Ends,” just came out Dec. 7, and features two gutsy sisters fighting for their lives and freedom.

LISTEN to Janeane's conversation with Caroline Taylor!

She discusses many fascinating topics -- among them:
  • being a female thriller author in a mostly male-centric genre
  • her writing process (she doesn't use an outline, and her book is fairly complicated, so I found this really interesting!)
  • how her experiences abroad shaped the storyline for "Loose Ends"

LOSING HER HOUSE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING …

When Carson Abbott Mahoney’s house is blown up, she decides it’s time to disappear. She can’t go to the police because she is the primary suspect in the murder of her former husband. Meanwhile, Carson’s sister Cam is on the run from the West Virginia commune where she sought refuge as “Sister Leah,” but instead found horrors causing her to kill the leader. Like her sister, she is also paranoid about jail, a fear stretching back to when they were imprisoned as teens for their parents’ debts in a foreign country where raping female captives was considered a job perk. Cam chooses a desperate act that lands her at death’s door, while Carson discovers she is one of many LOOSE ENDS to be dealt with because of her former husband’s small, but significant, role in an assassination.

“Hello, Star,” said Cam. She whipped off the baseball cap and Groucho glasses. “Remember me?”

“You — I told you never to contact me. He” — she pointed back toward the house — “doesn’t know. I’ve got two kids now. You have to leave.”

“I need help. You’re the only one I could think of who —”[C1]

“That’s all in the past.” The woman drew Cam deeper into the shadows. “I tell you, he doesn’t know. Nobody knows. I don’t even use that name.”

“Okay. Fine. I guess you don’t remember.”

“I remember everything. I was a different person then. If he finds out . . .” Her shoulders slumped. “My kids. Please. Leave me alone.”

“I wish I could, only I need money that would help me get out of here.”

“Are the cops after you?”

Cam shrugged. “It’s a mistake. You really don’t want to know the details.”

“I can’t help you. I won’t be a part of this.” Star pointed toward the back gate. “You have to go.”

“Before you open Loose Ends, grip your hat firmly. Caroline Taylor expertly weaves multiple plot threads into a roller-coaster reading ride, twisty as a Slinky and unpredictable as a hurricane’s path.”—Karen Pullen, author of Cold Feet and Cold Heart

“There’s nothing loose about Loose Ends. From the very first line, Caroline Taylor’s dark, zigzagging, and suspenseful narrative tightens the knot and doesn’t let up. You’ll want to devour it in one sitting.”—Louis Bayard, author of Mr. Timothy and The Pale Blue Eye

“This book takes the sisters Cam and Carson through one disaster after another as they jump from the frying pan into the fire and back again. Whether fleeing criminals or the police, these two never run out of ingenious, if dangerous, escape plans. Taylor’s few-notches-above-suspense plot keeps raising the bar with every chapter. Will they survive?”—Judy Hogan, author of the Penny Weaver mysteries and founding editor of Carolina Wren Press

Child experts share how to combat the chronic stress
plaguing kids today

LISTEN to Janeane's conversation
with author Ned Johnson!

American kids are grappling with an epidemic of anxiety and depression. Chronic stress is taking a toll during the formative years when children are “sculpting” their developing brains. What we are doing as parents and as a society isn’t working and something needs to change. THE SELF-DRIVEN CHILD offers a revolutionary new approach to parenting, based on decades of clinical experience and the latest developments in brain research. William Stixrud, a revered clinical neuropsychologist, and Ned Johnson, the founder of one of the most sought-after tutoring companies in the country, show how we are raising our kids in a brain-toxic environment. The result is a generation of highly scheduled, tightly wound teens who feel like imposters, lack direction, and often unravel in high school or their freshman year of college. American children are robbed of agency when countless studies reveal that a low sense of control is deeply damaging.

Johnson offers advice to parents, such as:

· When parents work harder than their kids to solve their problems, their kids get weaker, not stronger.

· Home should be a “safe base” where kids can recover from the stress of schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

· If you let your child make decisions for herself while she’s young, her brain will build the circuits that are necessary for resilience.

· Allow your child time to do things he enjoys. When you see your child focused on building a Lego castle, he is conditioning his brain to associate intense enjoyment with highly focused attention, practice, and hard work.

· Daydreaming, imagination, and fantasy are essential elements of a healthy mental life. Let your kids “do nothing” sometimes.

· If a teacher is assigning too much homework, speak with the teacher and tell them, “This isn’t working for my child.” You’d be surprised by how willing teachers can be to make adjustments if homework has become a real problem.

· College is a brain-toxic environment. Not all high school seniors are ready to go straight on to college. Talk to your child. If you both decide he needs to take a gap year, that’s in no way a sign of failure -- it’s a demonstration of maturity.

Stixrud and Johnson demonstrate that the best thing we can do for children is to help them develop the skills to make difficult choices, to own their mistakes, to learn ‘Plan-B thinking’ and make independent course corrections when things don’t go as planned. It’s not the kids who have never gone off track who run into trouble; it’s those who have never been allowed to take the wheel.
