Wheelchair Athletes Push Their Team Towards The Title While Responding To Adversity On And Off The Court In New Documentary Coming To Digital HD November 20th

LISTEN to today's conversation!

THE REBOUND

From director Shaina Allen, producer Michael Esposito, and Emmy Award-winning Executive Producers Nick Nanton and JW Dicks comes THE REBOUND – a feel good story about the Miami Heat Wheels and their quest for their first-ever NWBA Championship – to Digital HD November 20th.

Miami is a city known for its sports and diversity. For the Miami Heat Wheels it’s a city of opportunity, second chances, and a call to win against all odds. THE REBOUND is an insider’s look at the struggling wheelchair basketball team following a defeat at the national championships. In community supported wheelchair basketball programs across the nation, players push their way physically, mentally and emotionally through each season without the recognition or the resources of mainstream sports. Among the Heat Wheels, passion and drive are abundant, but the team’s dwindling checkbook threatens to cut short its attempt to take the national title.

Debut filmmakers Shaina Allen and Mike Esposito step deep inside the lives of three players as they endure and respond to adversity and fight their way to a second chance. Friends, family, and pride hang in the balance as these men find an extraordinary gift in the hand life has dealt. They hope for an education, a big break, and a new life. The cameras don’t stop when the players leave the court: the film follows them through the trials of daily life with a disability. With each victory, the players, and their team, get closer to the idea that anything is possible – and it’s all about how you rebound.

THE REBOUND is a production of Evergrain Studios in association with DNA Films. More information can be found at the official movie website, www.reboundthefilm.com.

Back to Human: How Great Leaders Create Connection in the Age of Isolation
by Dan Schwabel

LISTEN to today's conversation!

The workplace has become increasingly decentralized and automated--this year alone, nearly one in ten jobs will be eliminated. Humans are being replaced by robots, but some new jobs are being created to manage the jobs for humans. These new jobs require empathy, management skills, ability to communication and other soft skills robots may never possess. This best of us will need the ability to have face-to-face conversations, and to connect to those around us. In BACK TO HUMAN, New York Times bestselling author Dan Schwabel explains these complicated dynamics and gives business leaders of today a road map for success and leadership. Dan Schawbel is a New York Times bestselling author, Partner and Research Director at Future Workplace, and the Founder of both Millennial Branding and WorkplaceTrends.com. Through his companies, he’s conducted dozens of research studies and worked with major brands including American Express, GE, Microsoft, IBM, Coca Cola and Oracle. 11/26/18 @9:00am pst - Jessica Krell Director of Development for OUR HOUSE joined Janeane on KUCI 88.9fm

LISTEN to today's conversation!

Providing resources, support, and care at the moment when we most need it,
OUR HOUSE Grief Support Center marks its 25th anniversary this year. OUR HOUSE reaches individuals, families, organizations, and communities in need when someone dies, guiding people through the delicate process of grief. Serving thousands of children, teens, and adults every year, OUR HOUSE relies on trained volunteers and expert guidance as one of the most unique support centers in the country, subject of an Emmy-winning film, and recipients of a 4-star rating with Charity Navigator.

A number of events are lined up for 2018 to mark OUR HOUSE’s auspicious milestone: the RUN FOR HOPE 5K walk/run will welcome hundreds of participants to walk in honor of remembering their loved ones, and is scheduled for April 29. Later in the fall, the annual House of Hope Gala (October 6) and Night for Hope will continue to foster awareness and community building.

But perhaps most notable is the program Camp Erin, run twice every summer, which gives grieving children ages 6-17 the opportunity to bond with others in a safe, playful setting. Camp Erin was the subject of “One Last Hug: Three Days at Grief Camp,” the HBO documentary that was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program in 2014.

In addition to Camp Erin and the annual events, OUR HOUSE offers three core programs year-round: grief support groups for adults, children, and teens, run by trained volunteers, are available at support centers across the southland; OUR HOUSE also offers educational seminars, intensives, and programs for medical and social work professionals; and on-site grief response brings OUR HOUSE’s experts to community locations where grief might extend to coworkers, neighbors, or others impacted by death.

OUR HOUSE trains volunteer group leaders with a three-day seminar, and are always welcoming laypeople into the fold, regardless of their own background or connection to the programs. This reflects the ongoing commitment to the original impulse of founder JoAnn Lautman, inspired to start a support group after a young parent in her community died suddenly, leaving a grieving spouse, small child, and circle of friends emotionally shattered. By empowering people to help each other, OUR HOUSE makes connections between those who are willing to give their guidance and sympathy with those who are suffering the devastating loss of a loved one.

11/26/18 @ 9:45am pst - Author and Relationship Expert Jane Binns joined Janeane on KUCI 88.9fm

Did you know:
According to the APA, about 40-50% of married couples in the United States divorce.
In a report released by the U.S. Census Bureau every two years, there are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the United States today, responsible for raising 22 million children.
And according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, approximately 7-8% of the population will have PTSD at some point in their lives.

LISTEN to today's conversation with Jane Binns!

Author and relationship/dating expert Jane Binns reckons with these three issues in the forthcoming Fall memoir titled BROKEN WHOLE (on sale November 13; She Writes Press), an unflinching portrayal of dating after divorce as a single parent.

Brief book summary
When she was just shy of her 34th birthday, fifty-one-year-old writing instructor and clairvoyant Jane Binns found herself separated from her husband of 12 years, sharing custody of their 2-year-old son Shane. From meditation class and speed dating to singles dances and church groups, Binns meets a cast of characters over nearly two decades of dating. Throughout the book, Binns recounts the strain of trying to understand and rescue her on-again, off-again lover Steve, an unemployed Vietnam war veteran struggling with PTSD – the one man she connects with the most, but who is emotionally unavailable. It isn’t until the death of her father, shortly followed by the death of her ex-husband, to jar her from her toxic cycle: “Who was I if I wasn’t in a relationship? Would I be okay if I wasn’t in one?”
Some possible talking points:
  • Worst breakup stories?
  • Most romantic gestures?
  • Red flags to consider?
  • Promising signs for the long term?
  • Surprising places to meet people?
  • What to share (and what not to share) on a first date
  • How to evaluate online dating profiles
  • What to consider when dating with a major age gap
  • Life as a single parent: explaining divorce to a young child, introducing them to a new partner, etc.
  • Self-care and self-acceptance: are you ready to date?
  • Finding a network of support: join a group sharing the same experience, individual counseling, true friends and close family, etc.

11/19/18 @9:30am pst - Janeane spoke with George Lee, Co-Founder of the Age of No Retirement

LISTEN to today's conversation
with George Lee,
Co-Founder of the Age of No Retirement

ABOUT THE AGE OF NO RETIREMENT
Our goal is simple. To create a world where our age does not define us. Shattering age-related barriers and ageist stereotypes. Creating an age inclusive future.

VISION
In this turbulent time of deeply embedded divides and entrenched stereotypes, we are bringing together the collective wisdom and constructive participation of everyone — of all ages, all cultures, all business sectors, and across all geographies — to redesign a new society that works for all generations.

As Patti Moore, the mother of Universal Design said so eloquently, "when we insist on categorising people as either young or old...we create falsely conflicting camps for attention and action."

Let's all work together and create a world which works for us all.

ABOUT GEORGE LEE
In 2016, George was voted as one of the world's 50 Creative Leaders by the world's leading creative and innovation magazine, Creative Review. George started out as an organisational psychologist however soon realised that radical change could be achieved more effectively and more successfully using the power of design and radical creative thinking. In 2002 she founded her design company, This is Real Art. In its 12-year lifespan it became one of the most disruptive and celebrated design studios in the world, working with the likes of Channel 4, Sony, Virgin, MTV and Coca-Cola.
In 2012 she launched Commonland, a studio dedicated to using design-thinking to tackle big social issues. It was through Commonland that she met Dr. Jonathan Collie and the co-journey to tackle ageism and create a more united age neutral world began.

George lives in London with her daughter Iris and a rather exuberant hound called Ivy.

WHAT THEY DO
We bring together some of the best creative minds in Britain to help organisations realise the social and economic value of all-age thinking.

— We help organisations build an intergenerational workforce, where people of all ages, and all stages of their careers, can thrive in an inspiring age-inclusive environment.

— We help organisations find the right words and narrative with which to communicate with their customer base: where 25 year-olds and 65 year-olds have more in common than ever before.

— We help organisations avoid age-related stereotyping in the design of new products and services, so that they have the greatest appeal to the broadest reach of customer possible.

— We help organisations to think about the people and communities that they serve as more than a linear sequence of outdated age-specific groups of people. The linear life model is shattered, the retirement line has blurred, and people resent being treated like a number in an age-band bucket.

Monday, November 19 @9:45 AM ET - Janeane spoke with Kiese Laymon, author of the brilliant and candid memoir HEAVY

LISTEN to today's conversation
with Kiese Laymon

Kiese Laymon's memoir, HEAVY, named one of the 2018 KIRKUS PRIZE FINALIST and just reviewed in the New York Times Book Review

*Shortlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal and Kirkus Prize Finalist*

In this powerful and provocative memoir, genre-bending essayist and novelist Kiese Laymon explores what the weight of a lifetime of secrets, lies, and deception does to a black body, a black family, and a nation teetering on the brink of moral collapse.

Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

In Heavy, Laymon writes eloquently and honestly about growing up a hard-headed black son to a complicated and brilliant black mother in Jackson, Mississippi. From his early experiences of sexual violence, to his suspension from college, to his trek to New York as a young college professor, Laymon charts his complex relationship with his mother, grandmother, anorexia, obesity, sex, writing, and ultimately gambling. By attempting to name secrets and lies he and his mother spent a lifetime avoiding, Laymon asks himself, his mother, his nation, and us to confront the terrifying possibility that few in this nation actually know how to responsibly love, and even fewer want to live under the weight of actually becoming free.

A personal narrative that illuminates national failures, Heavy is defiant yet vulnerable, an insightful, often comical exploration of weight, identity, art, friendship, and family that begins with a confusing childhood—and continues through twenty-five years of haunting implosions and long reverberations.

11/12/18 at 9:15am pst - Janeane spoke with singer/songwriter Alice Stuart

LISTEN to today's conversation!

Alice Stuart (born 1942 in Chelan, Washington, United States) is an American blues and folk singer-songwriter and guitarist. She toured the UK with Van Morrison and throughout the United States with Mississippi John Hurt.

Her singing, songwriting, and guitar playing secured her invitations to tour nationally and internationally with Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Jerry Ricks, Phil Ochs, and Joan Baez, in addition to television appearances on The Dick Cavett Show and the Old Grey Whistle Test. In addition, Stuart's songs have been recorded by Kate Wolf, Irma Thomas, and Jackie DeShannon.

BIOGRAPHY

Stuart started taking piano lessons at the age of five. She picked up the guitar at age 18 and also plays banjo, auto harp, parade snare drum, and bass.

Stuart's early influences as a musician came from classical music, country artists of the 1940s and 1950s such as Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers and Ivory Joe Hunter, as well as records from the 1920s and 1930s from Blind Willie McTell, Bessie Smith, Rabbit Brown and artist Bob Dylan.[1]

At the age of twenty two, Stuart played the Berkeley Folk Festival in 1964. She was then invited back by creator/producer Barry Olivier to perform in 1966, and 1970. It was there that she formed a friendship with Mississippi John Hurt, which led to the two touring together.

Billboard magazine reviewed her debut release in 1964 with: "A beautiful new female voice is now on the folk horizon. Its owner's name is Alice Stuart. She sings with a clean freshness that is exciting in its simplicity. A folk find!"

In 1964, she met with musician Frank Zappa at a coffeehouse in Santa Monica, California. By chance as they both were waiting to meet the same person, guitarist Steve Mann. Alice became a member of Zappa's band, The Mothers of Invention, which at the time was mostly a blues band. Zappa wanted to incorporate Stuart's acoustic delta style with his electric leads. However, she lasted only about 6 months with the group and left before they made their debut album Freak Out!. She did not make any recordings with the group. Zappa later said he fired Alice from the band because she could not play "Louie Louie", although this was obviously intended to be a joke.

On November 28, 1971, Stuart appeared on BBC Television's Old Grey Whistle Test, a television program that aired in Europe. In addition to Stuart, a group named Redwing appeared, which among others, featured Timothy B. Schmit (later of The Eagles). Stuart and Redwing were both on the Fantasy label.

In 1972, Stuart sang the title theme song to the X-rated cartoon movie Fritz the Cat, with music done by Ed Bogas.

On January 2, 1973, Stuart appeared on The Dick Cavett Show, hosted at the time by George Carlin. Other guests on the show included Shelley Winters and Jimmy Breslin.[3] During this time, she also performed with Rosalie Sorrells, Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Jerry Ricks, Phil Ochs, and Joan Baez.

In 1974, Alice sat in with Fantasy Records label-mates, Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, several times, including at The Lion's Share in San Anselmo, CA.

Guitar Player magazine featured an article on Stuart in 1974, titled, "Well, so much for 'Mary Hamilton'". Rolling Stone profiled Stuart in 1975 in a feature, "Guitars of the Stars", where she was mentioned alongside Chet Atkins, Mike Bloomfield, David Bromberg, Jose Feliciano, Bonnie Raitt, and Doc Watson.

In the autumn 2006, Stuart contributed her song "Highway" to the album project Artists for Charity - Guitarists 4 the Kids, produced by Slang Productions, to assist World Vision Canada in helping underprivileged kids in need.[4]

Currently, she lives in the Seattle area and tours with her band, The Formerlys, which consists of Marc Willett, who was in The Kingsmen from 1984–1992, and Steven Flynn, formerly of Chuck Berry's band and Jr. Cadillac.

TODAY 11/12 at 9:00am pst on KUCI 88.9fm - Janeane spoke with Susan Bennett! You may not know Susan Bennett, but you definitely know her voice! Susan is a voice actor and singer whose voice has appeared on hundreds of radio and TV commercials, GPS and phone systems...and you know her best as the original voice of Siri!

LISTEN to today's conversation with Susan Bennett!

Susan is a voice actor and singer whose voice has appeared on hundreds of radio and TV commercials for such clients as McDonald’s, Macy’s, Goodyear, Papa John’s, Fisher Price, and more. She is the voice of Delta Airlines gates worldwide, as well as hundreds of GPS and phone systems, but you probably know her best as the original voice of Siri.

Susan has appeared on nationally televised programs The Mariah Carey Merriest Christmas Special, The Queen Latifah Show, CNN, Showbiz Tonight, The Jack & Triumph Show, the new To Tell the Truth, and she read the Top Ten list for David Letterman!

Susan was born in Burlington, Vermont, and spent her youth in New England. She was always interested in music and acting, which she pursued during her four years at Brown University, singing in theater productions, and in the jazz band, “Conglomerate.” Susan was the leader of the singing group, The Chattertocks, as well.

After graduation, she married NHL hockey player, Curt Bennett, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where Curt played for The Atlanta Flames, and Susan began her voiceover and singing career. Susan toured with Burt Bacharach as a backup singer, and later toured and traveled the world with Roy Orbison, also singing backup vocals, with a featured duet. She sang jingles as well for such clients as Coca Cola, Georgia Power, Kroger, and Krystal restaurants. It was after a jingle session that Susan was asked to voice a commercial when the scheduled voice actor didn’t show up. She discovered that voiceover was something she did well and enjoyed, so she took voice coaching, got an agent, and started on a career that is still going strong!

Susan continues to live and work in Atlanta, Georgia, along with second husband guitarist and audio engineer, Rick Hinkle, of Audiocam Music. Susan and Rick had a private event band called “Interactive!” for more than two decades, and they still continue to work together in their 60’s and 70’s rock and soul band, “Boomers Gone Wild!”

Susan has one child, son Cameron Schuyler Bennett, who lives in Los Angeles. He is a photographer (www.cambennett.com), and also works with social media company, Fanbase.

MEET CEVIN SOLING

Cevin Soling, president of Spectacle Films and Xemu Records, works as writer, director, producer, artist, and academic.

Soling directed and produced, THE WAR ON KIDS, winner of the best educational documentary award at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival. The film demonstrates how American public schools have become modeled after prisons in response to fear and a burgeoning intolerance of youth. The film ran at the Quad Cinema in New York City and screened at Harvard University as well as other major universities. It has received accolades from The New York Times, Variety, and The Huffington Post. Soling was a guest on numerous radio shows including The Lionel Show on Air America, The Joey Reynolds Show on WOR, and The Leonard Lopate Show on WNYC. In addition, the film was featured on national television along with an interview on The Dr. Nancy Show on MSNBC as well as on RT Television, and Soling was the featured guest on The Colbert Report. The film has been broadcast internationally on The Sundance Channel and aired domestically on The Documentary Channel.

Soling also produced and directed IKLAND, a film about a tribe in Northern Uganda that had been described as the most despicable people on the planet by the anthropologist who studied them over forty years ago. IKLAND won the award for Best Documentary content at the Boston International Film Festival and was released theatrically in June of 2012 where it received enthusiastic reviews from The New York Times, Discovery Magazine, and from several syndicated critics.

Soling wrote, directed, and produced the feature film, THE WAR ON THE WAR ON DRUGS, winner of the best experimental feature film award at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival, the Stoney Award for best documentary from High Times, as well as the “Clear Creek” Honorable Mention Award at the Winslow International Film Festival.

The New York Times proclaimed in a rave review that THE WAR ON THE WAR ON DRUGS "...a lively and well-executed satire that sweetens its occasional truths with rebellious humor..." The film was acquired for DVD distribution worldwide through Time Warner by The Disinformation Company.

Soling also executive produced the independent feature RELAX, IT'S JUST SEX, starring Jennifer Tilly, Lori Petty and Cynda Williams, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was seen on HBO and Showtime.

As a writer, Soling penned the animated short film, BORIS THE DOG, which won the “Premio Nuovo” award at the Williamsburg Brooklyn Film Festival and was part of Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Festival. The film aired as part of MTV's CARTOON SUSHI as well as on the BBC in England, where it was accompanied by an interview with Soling. His short films CAPTAIN STICKMAN and DESTRUCTION, which Soling wrote and directed, were official selections at 2006 Chicago Indiefest.

Soling created and writes the animated series THE BILL JOHNSON SHOW, also featured in Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Festival and in video compilation, “Caught in the Act,” released by Shout Factory. He has written a series of ten illustrated books under the heading of The Rumpleville Chronicles. The first three titles of the ten book series, The Jolly Elf, The Disciples of Trotsky, and The Bomb that Followed Me Home were released through Monk Media. Prominent publishing industry reviewer, ForeWord Magazine described the books as such: “These quick bursts of cracked brilliance, these splintered bedtime stories for grown folks, have the power to make readers laugh, and then think, then scoff at the futility of thinking.” His latest book, Tiffany Brittany Brook was picked up for representation by Langtons International Agency. His poetry earned him the title, Pharaoh of Fluff at the 2009 Fluff celebration in Somerville, MA. He wrote programming code and was published in the computer journal On Three magazine. He is also the author of The Student’s Resistance Handbook. Media attention to the book included a featured guest appearance on The Kennedy Show on Fox Business.

Soling has articles published in The Atlantic, Forbes, Wired, The Daily Beast, Science 2.0, Healthy Living, Mind/Shift, Disinformation, Education News, and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

In the documentary arena, Soling is produced and executive produced the hour-long documentary about trepanation, A HOLE IN THE HEAD, which won the Best Documentary Award at both the Atlantic City Film Festival and at the Brooklyn International Film Festival. A HOLE IN THE HEAD was broadcast on Discovery and The Learning Channel and is available on video through Beatnik Home Video. Soling also executive produced the documentary on auto-urine therapy, URINE: GOOD HEALTH, also available on Beatnik Home Video.

Soling has just completed work on MR. CEVIN AND THE CARGO CULT – a documentary about a cargo cult in Vanuatu that worships America. A documentary on Gilligan’s Island as a reflection of the political and social climate of the early 60’s, entitled THE GILLIGAN MANIFESTO, is being released in November 2018; and, a film about the staging of a Swan Lake ballet performance featuring actual llamas in the roles of the swans and a jug band performing the Tchaikovsky score, is in production. A preview of this project aired on PBS in Indiana, where the documentary will be shot.

He has also in production on THE SUMMER OF HATE – a documentary on the Beatles’ controversial statements that led to bonfires, boycotts, and death threats against the band during their tour of the South in 1966. The film addresses the Beatles’ little known contributions to the Civil Rights movement and how the backlash against the band was inspired, in part, for their aggressive stance against racism in America.

In addition to his film work, Soling has been active in the music industry via his record company, Xemu Records. He was the songwriter, guitarist, and lead singer for THE NEANDERTHAL SPONGECAKE. Their CD, THE SIDE EFFECTS OF NAPALM, received considerable airplay across the U.S including major stations such as WLIR and WXRK (K-ROCK) in New York City. The song, Tastes Like Chicken was featured on the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento Show. Another song from the album, Buffalo, was the closing theme song for the A&E TV series Confessions of a Matchmaker. He currently writes and performs with THE LOVE KILLS THEORY – a band inspired by the Situationist philosophical movement and as well as bio-genetic studies on the evolution of despair. Their debut CD, Happy Suicide, Jim!, was released in January of 2007 and charted on CMJ’s top 200 and was played in rotation on over 70 commercial radio stations.

Soling has also served as producer for Jackie Chan, Ani DiFranco, Don Ho, The Smile Zone, and The Neanderthal Spongecake. with Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett

Lisa Feldman Barrett, PhD, is a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, with appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition to the book How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain, Dr. Barrett has published over 200 peer-reviewed, scientific papers appearing in Science, Nature Neuroscience, and other top journals in psychology and cognitive neuroscience, as well as six academic volumes published by Guilford Press. She has also given a popular TED talk.

Dr. Barrett received a National Institutes of Health Director’s Pioneer Award for her revolutionary research on emotion in the brain. These highly competitive, multimillion dollar awards are given to scientists of exceptional creativity who are expected to transform biomedical and behavioral research.

Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Barrett has testified before Congress, presented her research to the FBI, consulted to the National Cancer Institute, appeared on Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman and The Today Show with Maria Shriver, and been a featured guest on public television and worldwide radio programs. She is also an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada.

A new theory of how the brain constructs emotions that could revolutionize psychology, health care, the legal system, and our understanding of the human mind

Emotions feel automatic, like uncontrollable reactions to things we think and experience. Scientists have long supported this assumption by claiming that emotions are hardwired in the body or the brain. Today, however, the science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology--and this paradigm shift has far-reaching implications for us all.

Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose theory of emotion is driving a deeper understanding of the mind and brain, and shedding new light on what it means to be human. Her research overturns the widely held belief that emotions are housed in different parts of the brain and are universally expressed and recognized. Instead, she has shown that emotion is constructed in the moment, by core systems that interact across the whole brain, aided by a lifetime of learning. This new theory means that you play a much greater role in your emotional life than you ever thought. Its repercussions are already shaking the foundations not only of psychology but also of medicine, the legal system, child-rearing, meditation, and even airport security.

Why do emotions feel automatic? Does rational thought really control emotion? How does emotion affect disease? How can you make your children more emotionally intelligent? How Emotions Are Made answers these questions and many more, revealing the latest research and intriguing practical applications of the new science of emotion, mind, and brain.

11/5/18 at 9:45am pst - Director Joseph Culp joined host Janeane to talk about his latest film, Welcome to the Men's Group

LISTEN to today's show!

WELCOME TO THE MEN’S GROUP which features an incredible ensemble cast including Stephen Tobolowsky (The Goldbergs, Groundhog Day, Memento) and Golden Globe Nominee Timothy Bottoms, releasing November 9 on digital.

ABOUT THE FILM

Joseph Culp and Scott Ben-Yashar bring you a film that explores what happens in a men’s group when people are no longer willing to hide behind social conventions. Welcome to the Men’s Group is a comedy-drama that explores real-life issues that affect everyone (not just men). The modern male is under pressure like never before, and WTTMG explores how men deal, or don’t deal, with these issues, and how it effects their lives and families.

WATCH the trailer

This film takes us inside the intimate dynamic of an all-male support group (read character outlines) when they gather one morning for a ritual breakfast and their unique form of male bonding—One Sunday a month, these eight men refrain from beer and football to sit in a circle where they share their personal issues, in the noble hope of becoming a bit more evolved than their fathers.

On this day, things do not go as planned when one member appears headed for a breakdown, and long-standing conflict and secrets threaten to destroy the trust between the men.

Welcome to the Men’s Group is an emotional roller-coaster through the often-bumpy inner terrain of the male psyche, as we hear the men open about their lives, sharing truth, telling lies, and revealing secrets they dare not discuss in their lives.

The film is largely inspired by the phenomenon of the "Men's Movement" of the past 30 years that was championed by writers like the poet Robert Bly and his bestselling book "Iron John" which explored the need for men to reconnect to their authenticity through storytelling, myth and ritualized gathering. The film shows the major shift in men's consciousness and the changing attitudes towards traditional models of masculinity that are evolving every day.

It is a challenging look at “male vulnerability”. It also uses humor and irreverence to celebrate the zaniness and absurdity of men – “Irreverence is the doorway to the sacred.” Ultimately the film shows a group of flawed men in a noble, painful and outrageously funny struggle to find their authenticity and a sense of community, and invites us, both men and women, to do the same.

She is the co-editor of the Culture and Politics of Health Care Work series at Cornell University Press, author, co-author or editor of 19 books, and Assistant Adjunct Professor at the UCSF School of Nursing and an Affiliated scholar with the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine’s Wilson Centre. She is the Senior Policy Fellow at the Veterans’ Health Care Policy Institute. She received the Disabled American Veterans Special Recognition Award for her writing on Veterans’ healthcare (2017).

Suzanne will speak about:

Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans have returned home with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, chronic pain and other injuries that put them at high risk for substance abuse and suicide.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) provides innovative, wholistic, and high quality care, at lower cost, because it functions as the only integrated health care system in the United States.

Federally-funded veterans’ health care is now being restructured so that billions of taxpayer dollars will flow to private doctors and for-profit hospitals with little experience treating veterans.

The VHA actually delivers care that is equal to and often superior to that received by Americans relying on private insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid coverage.

Why advocates of a single-payer or “Medicare for All” system in the U.S. should help veterans and their caregivers fight VHA privatization.
