9/23/19 @ 9:00am pst - Up and running. From tragedy to triumph. Jami Goldman Marseilles, double amputee, champion athlete. Motivational speaker, teacher.

Jami Goldman Marseilles, motivational speaker, teacher and gold medal athlete inspires and connects with the audience on the importance of dedication, perseverance, stamina, strength and triumph.

LISTEN to today's conversation with
featured guest Jami Marseilles!

Jami Goldman Marseilles is a mother, teacher, author, multiple gold medal winner, world record holder, motivational speaker and double amputee. Her remarkable chronicle of redemption began on a fateful day in December 1987. Driving home from a ski trip in New Mexico, Jami, 19, and her friend Lisa, found themselves on a deserted Arizona logging road in a blinding snow storm. After sliding into a snow bank the women found themselves stranded and alone, huddling for warmth in their stalled, now buried Chevy Blazer while the storm raged on.

It was three days and three nights before the storm abated and they were finally able to emerge from the buried Blazer. They quickly discovered that the snow was too deep for them to seek help and with supplies limited to a cinnamon roll and a frozen six-pack of soda they retreated to the car to wait for a rescue party. But none had been sent. Unbeknownst to Jami, Lisa and their families the road had been closed by the regional authorities. It was another week before they were chanced upon by two recreational snow-mobilers.

Barely conscious and severely frost-bitten Jami and Lisa were rushed to the hospital. While she had barely escaped death Jami now had to face the horrendous implications of gangrene in her legs and both were amputated below the knee. Thus began her remarkable journey of recovery. With characteristic determination Jami endured months of painful therapy, strengthening her upper body, relearning how to walk with her prosthetics. But in typical fashion learning to walk again was not enough. In 1996, after watching the Paralympics Games, Jami decided to become a professional Paralympics runner herself. Fitted with “Cheetah” legs, she took naturally to running, and soon began to compete internationally. Not only is she the holder of numerous world records and multiple gold medals, Jami is currently the only “double below the knee amputee” woman in the world to have successfully completed a half marathon and full marathon.

UP AND RUNNING, The Jami Goldman Story, 2001, Pocket Books, Simon & Schuster is a powerfully candid, uplifting and inspiring account of Jami’s extraordinary triumph over adversity and her personal transformation from victim of tragic circumstance to world-record breaking athlete, author and motivational speaker.

Jami lives in Orange County, CA with her husband Beau and two children. She is an elementary school teacher, author of two books, has featured in two major motion pictures, (one produced and directed by Steven Spielberg), and a highly acclaimed Adidas foot wear tv commercial. With her indomitable spirit and incredible story of survival, Jami teaches others how to use the power of body, mind, spirit as a catalyst to conquer adversity and reach new levels of well-being and happiness.

9/23/19 at 9:45am pst - Director Michael Berry joins Janeane to talk about the New York City musical, STUCK

Stuck, the New York City musical that enjoyed a critically acclaimed theatrical run earlier this year, will be released on VOD on August 27 and DVD on September 17. Starring Emmy nominated actor Giancarlo Esposito, Grammy-nominated music sensation Ashanti, Amy Madigan, Omar Chaparro, Arden Cho and Gerard Canonico and from the producer of John Wick and Drinking Buddies, the film is a wonderful reminder of the power music has to bring people together in this troubled world.

Vision Films proudly presents the New York City musical phenomenon, STUCK
Available on VOD August 27 and DVD September 17, 2019

Vision Films Inc. in association with MJW Films and Little Angel Productions are delighted to present the heartwarming original pop musical film, Stuck on VOD and DVD for the first time. Taking place over one fateful day on a New York City subway, a group of strangers from different walks of life are unexpectedly brought together in an uplifting celebration of life and kindness through music. Directed by Michael Berry and adapted for the screen by Berry and Riley Thomas, the film that Variety says “benefits from a lot of heart and not being like anything else out there” enjoyed a critically acclaimed theatrical run earlier this year. Produced by Mike Witherill (John Wick and Drinking Buddies) and Joe Mundo (Sunset Strip and Cardboard Boxer), Stuck will be released across all major VOD platforms on August 27 and on DVD September 17, 2019.

“This movie is wonderful. It has the flavor of "Rent" but its acting, story and songs are better” - Jackie K. Cooper

Based on the stage musical by Riley Thomas of the same name which opened in Chicago in 2008 and played off-Broadway with the New York Musical Festival in 2012, Stuck stars Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), Amy Madigan (Gone Baby Gone, Field of Dreams), Grammy award-winning artist Ashanti, Arden Cho (Teen Wolf, Chicago Med), Omar Chaparro (Pokemon Detective Pikachu, Show Dogs) and Gerard Canonico (Be More Chill, Not Fade Away) as the New York subway commuters with stories to sing.

“When they sing to each other, they sing to us. What they sing about speaks about all of us” -Every Movie Has A Lesson

A New York subway train stops in the tunnel beneath the city with six complete strangers stuck inside the rear car. The stranger are a cross section of New Yorkers of different race, culture and age. The emotions of the trapped, frustrated strangers simultaneously explode as the subway car becomes a kind of magical, musical conduit cell. A place where strangers reveal through song more of themselves than any of them could ever have imagined.

At center stage in Lloyd (Giancarlo Esposito), a homeless man who seems to be a fixture on the subway car. Lloyd is a mystery. A combination observer, prophet, mediator, artist, friend and psychologist. Or perhaps just a lost soul who is possibly insane. He is joined at various stops by five other commuters. Eve (Ashanti), a brooding but strong, intelligent, career-orientated African-American woman dealing with a troubling personal situation. Ramon (Omar Chaparro), a hard working Hispanic man working multiple jobs to make ends meet for his wife and girls. Alicia (Arden Cho) a guarded and reclusive Asian dancer with a devastating secret. Caleb (Gerard Canonico), the young comic book artist who has been loitering at the studio where Alicia dances. And Sue (Amy Madigan), a college music Professor still dealing with the heavy loss of a loved one.

The music and songs in the film are all original with musical styles specific to each character- a lyrical and musical extension of their culture, thoughts, story and experience with the elements of pop, rap, rock, classical and motown- set almost entirely on the New York City subway.

Stuck will be available on digital on August 27 from platforms including iTunes, Vudu, Playstation, Google Play, Xbox, and FandangoNow, as well as cable affiliates everywhere and to buy on DVD for $19.95 on September 17, 2019.

“Stuck has been one of the greatest, most rewarding, and most challenging projects I have ever been associated with”, says director/co-writer, Michael Berry. “My hope is that these six characters who are trapped on this train and are so much more than they appear at first glance, will remind audiences that now, more than ever, we need to meet others with more compassion. Truth is, every one of them and every one of us, no matter where we come from, is someone’s daughter, son, mother, father, uncle or aunt. We are way more alike than we are different and we are all stuck here together, just trying to get where we are going”.

“We are proud to be presenting Stuck on VOD and DVD”, says Vision Films CEO/ Managing Director, Lise Romanoff. “With it’s resonating themes of kindness and humanity, it is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face as they sing along to the unforgettable original soundtrack!”

LISTEN to today's show with featured guest Pen Pearson

A poet in Edwardian London. A woman struggling to let her voice be heard.

In 1894, sisters Charlotte and Anne Mew take a solemn vow never to marry, and never to pass on the family curse: insanity. The spinster Mew sisters descend into genteel poverty, their mother on an invalid's sofa, Anne, the painter, in a menial job.

But Charlotte, the poet, will find immortality, and unexpected love.

Her path will require that she keep secrets and make sacrifices that may be too much even for Charlotte's determined spirit.

In Bloomsbury's Late Rose, Pen Pearson, herself an accomplished poet, has imagined a vivid and affecting story of a woman's life in Edwardian London that will engage and move every reader.

ABOUT PEN PEARSON
Pen is the author of Poetry as Liturgy and Bloomsbury's Late Rose, a forthcoming novel from Chickadee Prince Books about the harrowing life of British poet Charlotte Mew. The photo of Pen was taken in the public garden just a stone's throw from the house where Charlotte lived in genteel poverty with her sister Anne, an artist. Their residence has since made way for Bloomsbury Theatre, but Charlotte's unmistakable presence still haunts the garden and neighboring streets. Follow Pen if you'd like to be notified when Bloomsbury's Late Rose is released on Amazon.

9/9/19 @9am pst - memoirist Hendrika de Vries joined Janeane live on KUCI 88.9fm

Memoirist Embodies Resistance in Nazi-era Title

LISTEN to today's show with Hendrika de Vries

A nail-biting tale of female strength, spiritual resilience and resistance to evil that is relevant today. You won’t forget this beautifully written story ––Dr. Betsy Cohen, psychoanalyst

SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA – In her award-winning memoir When a Toy Dog Become a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew (She Writes Press, August 27, 2019), Hendrika de Vries focuses on the importance of female empowerment. A story of survival and the power of love, courage, and imagination in a time of violent oppression, Hendrika de Vries shows how the bond between mother-daughter is made stronger amidst subversive activities and acts of moral courage.

Born when girls were to be housewives and mothers, a Dutch “daddy’s girl” in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam learns about female empowerment when her father is deported to a POW camp in Germany and her mother joins the Resistance. Freedoms taken for granted are eroded with escalating brutality by men with swastika armbands who aim to exterminate those they deem “inferior” and those who do not obey.

Following de Vries’ journey from child- to woman-hood, When A Toy Dog Became a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew bears witness to the strength that flourishes despite oppression, the power of women existing beyond cultural gender roles of the time, and shows that memories hold the keys to the betterment of our future. A therapist for over thirty years, de Vries has used her experience healing the trauma of others’ to tap into her childhood memories of Nazi-occupation to empower others to stand up in the face of injustice.

Author of When a Toy Dog Became a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew, Hendrika de Vries’ life experiences, from the dark days of Nazi-occupied Amsterdam as a child, through her years as a swimming champion, young wife and mother in Australia, and a move to America in the sixties, have infused her work as a therapist, teacher, and writer. Hendrika holds a BA (with Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of Colorado, an MTS (cum laude) in theological studies from Virginia Theological Seminary, and an MA in counseling psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. When a Toy Dog Became a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew

Hendrika de Vries | August 27, 2019 | She Writes Press

Paperback ISBN: 978-1-63152-658-9 | Memoir

This beautifully crafted memoir reminds us that we are never far from oppression by those who wish to silence us.–– Maureen Murdock, author of The Heroine’s Journey: Woman’s Quest for Wholeness

She is a master storyteller. –– Dennis Patrick Slattery, Ph.D.

From the first page, DeVries’ book left me holding my breath at what she and her parents went through when the Nazis took over Amsterdam; one of the worst times in western history. When at age five, she lost a comfortable and safe world. DeVries’ storytelling makes this nonfiction book read like a good novel. Readers almost 'live' what she and her family experienced and how they rebuilt their life. - Nonfiction Authors Association Book Awards Program

In an interview, Hendrika de Vries will discuss:

  • The significance behind her memoir’s title and what it represents
  • Her experience as a child in Nazi occupied Amsterdam
  • How male presence shaped her understanding of gender and the absence of her father in her early years influenced her relationship with her mother
  • The xenophobia and violence in today’s political climate, and how looking at our past can help guide our future
  • What led her to becoming a therapist
  • How she uses dreams and intuitive imagination to facilitate recovery in her patients

Her experience as a mother and what being a woman means to her––the mother-daughter relationship

ABOUT HOLLAND TAYLOR
The New Yorker has called Holland Taylor "the first vaudeville Gentile we ever saw." Her New York stage performances include Bess in Breakfast with Les and Bess, the original productions of Butley, opposite Alan Bates, and A.R. Gurney's The Cocktail Hour. She still holds her head high after taking over for Eve Arden, and one week later, opening the historic flop, Moose Murders. Recently she took Broadway by storm as writer and star of ANN, a one-woman show about the late Texas Governor Ann Richards, which resulted in rave reviews, a TONY Award nomination for Best Actress, Drama Desk and Drama League nominations, and the Outer Circle Critics award for Best Solo Performance. There is a filmed version for broadcast of the 2016 production of ANN presented at Zach Theatre in Austin, Texas, where Holland reprised the role and brought ANN home to Texas.

Following her Broadway run in ANN, Holland appeared in a movie titled Kepler's Dream, an inspiring film for a young audience, and last season in New York, she played another character who never leaves the stage and talks a LOT, in Pulitzer prize winner David Lindsay Abaire's dark comedy, Ripcord, at the Manhattan Theatre Club. This spring Holland wound up a four-month limited run on Broadway in the star-studded revival of The Front Page, opposite Nathan Lane, John Slattery, Robert Morse, John Goodman and other luminaries. Over the years in Los Angeles, she has performed on stage in Kindertransport, and played opposite Christopher Lloyd in Yasmina Reza's The Unexpected Man at the Geffen. She has given narrations for the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Essa-Pekka Salonen and John Adams, and narrated the Harry Potter Suite for John Williams at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

She has worked extensively in film and television, appearing in Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, To Die For, Next Stop Wonderland, One Fine Day, George of the Jungle, The Truman Show, Happy Accidents, Spy Kids (2 & 3), Keeping the Faith, Legally Blonde, and Baby Mama, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. On television, Holland has been nominated for the Emmy seven times, winning Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for the sexy, brilliant Judge Roberta Kittleson on The Practice. Among her numerous series starring roles: The Powers that Be, Norman Lear's short-lived but highly acclaimed political satire, Bosom Buddies, with Tom Hanks, and, of course, the juggernaut, Two and a Half Men, with her dear boys, Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer and number 3 son, Ashton Kutcher. Holland was recently featured in Sebastian Lelio’s Gloria with Julianne Moore. Her current project: Mr. Mercedes, a limited TV series for Audience Network, starring the great Irish actor Brenden Gleeson, written by Executive Producer David Kelley, run by director Jack Bender, based on a trilogy of novels by Stephen King.

9/2/19 at 9:00am pst - E.R. Ramzipoor, a writer and content marketer, joined Janeane on KUCI 88.9fm

LISTEN to today's conversation
with Evan (author
E.R. Ramzipoor).

In our own age of “fake news” and social media blitz-storms, and with real journalism under constant siege, it is important to remember the role propaganda plays promoting both right and wrong at crucial moments in history. When first time novelist E.R. Ramzipoor discovered the forgotten story of a satirical anti-Nazi newspaper created and distributed by the Resistance in occupied Belgium she knew she had hit upon a story with both historical significance and contemporary resonance. Her dazzling debut, The Ventriloquists (Park Row Books; August 27, 2019) brings riveting tension and surprising humor to this little known chapter of World War II history as she “reminds us that so much of what we read, hear and watch is propaganda—for someone, for some organization, some country” (Heather Morris, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz).

ABOUT THE BOOK

Brussels, 1943. The Nazi occupiers have hatched a plan to turn the resistance newspapers into Nazi propaganda mouthpieces that will sway public opinion against the Allies. To do so, they conscript key members of the Front d’Indépendance to carry out their dirty work, and the ragtag band of misfits have little choice if they wish to escape death. But then rogue journalist Marc Aubrion has a brilliant notion: turn the tables and create a fake edition of Le Soir that not-so-subtly mocks Hitler and the oppressors who have overrun Europe. That is a joke worth dying for—and the Ventriloquists have less than three weeks to pull it off.

“I first ‘met’ the original ventriloquist, Marc Aubrion, in my senior year at UC Berkeley,” Ramzipoor recalls. “While doing archival research for my thesis on underground literature. I came across a document written by five women who worked for the Office of War during World War II... ‘The patriots seem to take delight in including the Germans on their distribution routes. To get a wider public among the Germans, the patriots insert articles in the German-controlled press or manage to fake a whole edition….’ Further research revealed that the Belgians wrote and distributed this paper in only eighteen days. A writer, Marc Aubrion, orchestrated the most elaborate feat of satire the Europe has ever seen: the grandchild of Voltaire and the ancestor of Improv Everywhere.”

In this triumphant debut inspired by true events, a ragtag gang of journalists and resistance fighters risk everything for an elaborate scheme to undermine the Reich.

The Nazis stole their voices. But they would not be silenced.

Brussels, 1943. Twelve-year-old street orphan Helene survives by living as a boy and selling copies of the country’s most popular newspaper, Le Soir, now turned into Nazi propaganda. Helene’s world changes when she befriends a rogue journalist, Marc Aubrion, who draws her into a secret network that publishes dissident underground newspapers.

The Nazis track down Aubrion’s team and give them an impossible choice: turn the resistance newspapers into a Nazi propaganda bomb that will sway public opinion against the Allies, or be killed. Faced with no decision at all, Aubrion has a brilliant idea. While pretending to do the Nazis’ bidding, they will instead publish a fake edition of Le Soir that pokes fun at Hitler and Stalin—daring to laugh in the face of their oppressors.

The ventriloquists have agreed to die for a joke, and they have only eighteen days to tell it.

Featuring an unforgettable cast of characters and stunning historical detail, E.R. Ramzipoor’s dazzling debut novel illuminates the extraordinary acts of courage by ordinary people forgotten by time. It is a moving and powerful ode to the importance of the written word and to the unlikely heroes who went to extreme lengths to orchestrate the most stunning feat of journalism in modern history.
