3/16/20 @9:30am pst - Author Val Walker joined Janeane live on KUCI 88.9fm to talk about 400 FRIENDS AND NO ONE TO CALL

LISTEN to today's show

400 FRIENDS AND NO ONE TO CALL: Breaking Through Isolation and Building Community (a Central Recovery Press paperback, on sale March 26, 2020).

In this candid and comforting guide for isolating times, Walker explains how she found herself stranded and alone after major surgery when none of her friends showed up to help her. As a professional rehabilitation counselor, she was too embarrassed to reveal how utterly isolated she was by asking someone for help. As she recovered, Val found her voice and developed a plan of action for people who lack social support, not only to heal from the pain of isolation, but to create a solid strategy for rebuilding a sense of community.

Drawing on both her own experience as well as the accounts of others who overcame their own isolating ordeals, Walker compassionately yet realistically shows us how to break through our isolation by befriending our wider community, building a social safety net, and fostering our sense of belonging.

“Without any pomposity, this is a compendium of real-life stories and useful tips about solving the universal problem of loneliness. I plan to recommend this book widely!”

—Jacqueline Olds, MD, Coauthor, The Lonely American, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, and Psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital

Q&A with VAL WALKER

About 400 FRIENDS AND NO ONE TO CALLWhile social media enables us to make connections with more people than ever before, social isolation is a growing epidemic in the United States. The National Science Foundation reported in 2014 that the number of Americans with no close friends has tripled since 1985, and an unprecedented number of Americans are living alone, particularly people over sixty. Meanwhile, the youngest generations among us - Generation Z and Millennials - report being the loneliest despite their high consumption of social media. As it turns out, we can have hundreds of “friends” on social media without having any meaningful connections whatsoever.

This unhappy realization also hit Val Walker, author of 400 FRIENDS AND NO ONE TO CALL: Breaking Through Isolation and Building Community (a Central Recovery Press paperback, on sale March 26, 2020), when she found herself stranded after a major surgery. A well-established rehabilitation counselor, she was too embarrassed to reveal on social media how utterly isolated she was by asking for someone to help. As she recovered, Val found her voice and developed a plan of action for those seeking to heal from the pain of isolation and created a solid strategy for rebuilding support.

Drawing on both her own experience as well as the accounts of others who overcame their own isolating ordeals, Walker encourages us to break through our isolation and build community by:

Finding one empathetic person to talk to. Openly admitting to a comforting person (a friend, a therapist, or even a compassionate voice on a warmline) that we are lonely is a vital step to breaking out of the shame and social stigma of loneliness.

Seeking meetups or support groups with those in similar situations. What isolates us can also become the force that unites us. Whether we are contending with social anxiety, loss of a loved one, illnesses, addictions, divorce, or any number of isolating issues, Meetup.com, www.211.org, and other platforms often feature groups for others grappling with similar issues. Staying open-minded and not too fixated on who fits our “tribe.” It is often surprising who welcomes us into their world when we aren’t trying so hard to find the “right” group to belong to.

Offering our help to others. Ironically, we gather support by giving support. This is why volunteering is a solid way to build social networks.
Persevering and not taking rejection personally. Many people might not be interested in developing a new friendship or maybe they have put their social lives on the backburner. Don’t give up! With persistence, we will find others who are looking to expand their networks, as well.

Encouraging us to befriend our loneliness and validate our need to search for more support, Walker compassionately yet realistically shows us how to build our networks with more meaningful connections. An essential read for anyone who has ever felt lonely in a crowd or isolated in their unique circumstances, 400 FRIENDS AND NO ONE TO CALL will inspire even the loneliest among us to seek more fulfilling relationships.

Seeing Is Believing: Women Direct focuses on the journeys of four diverse, articulate filmmakers who provide a wonderful mix of perspectives. The film’s central subjects are honest without complaining, direct without blaming, and optimistic about change. They share valuable insights into how they became directors and discuss what steps are required to ensure more women are given the opportunity to work at the highest levels of the film industry. The film furthers the conversation to ask “What is the broader role of storytelling in our society and how can women use filmed media as a unique opportunity to catalyze progress?”

Featuring Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, The Banker’s Wife), Sarah Gavron (Suffragette, Brick Lane, Rocks), Li Lu (There is a New World Somewhere, A Town Called Victoria) and Naima Ramos-Chapman (HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness) the film includes additional insights from Directors Kimberly Peirce, Bethany Rooney, Betty Thomas, John Wells, Deborah Riley Draper, Lizzie Borden, Deborah Del Prete, Deborah Kampmeier, Sarah Kernochan, Finola Hughes, Kimberly McCullough, Lee Grant, Joanna Kerns, Meera Menon, Leslie Hope, Jann Turner, Robert Munic, Michael Rauch, Marianna Palka and more.

“I decided I wanted to make the kind of film that I needed to see,” says Director Cady McClain. “One that didn’t focus totally on the obstacles but inspired me to keep going. I wanted to see women at all levels of directing and all forms of work – theater, web series, TV, film, music videos, commercials . . . and give both myself and the audience tools to use as well as encouragement and insights into the profession. There’s nothing I like better than to hear someone say, “After watching your film I realized, I can do this!” or “I loved seeing your film. It was really positive and I didn’t expect that!” That makes me really happy.”

According to Collective Eye’s James-MIchael Boyer: “We are excited to be helping to bring Cady McClain’s Seeing is Believing: Women Direct” to a wider audience! The film is both important and timely, and we are proud to support the change it aims to produce.”

“Quite simply, The 4 Season Solution is the answer to our stressful, unbalanced lives.

It is clear-eyed, accessible, and full of solid, practical information that will help readers change their lives for the better.”

–Robb Wolf, New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Solution and Wired to Eat

New York Times bestselling coauthor of The Whole30 and It Starts With Food presents a paradigm-shifting plan that shows you how to boost energy, improve health, and feel happier by living more in tune with the seasons.

With his runaway bestsellers It Starts with Food and The Whole30, health trailblazer Dallas Hartwig has helped millions of people improve their lives by changing how they eat. In this groundbreaking new book, he reveals the antidote to today’s epidemics of burnout, weight gain, disease, and fatigue. Rooted in ancestral health, yet designed for our busy, modern lives, The 4 Season Solution is a blueprint for not just eating better, but living better.

Not long ago, our ancestors lived according to the changing seasons, adjusting how they slept, ate, moved, and even socialized throughout the year. But today, we are more disconnected from the natural world than ever. We wake before the sun rises and go to bed long after it sets. We eat tropical fruits in the dead of winter. We exercise in climate- controlled environments. We connect virtually instead of emotionally. Our lives are frenetic, stressful, and exhausting. In other words, we are living in a chronic summer, and it’s killing us.

Packed with crucial research and clear-eyed writing, The 4 Season Solution provides a new, sustainable model for living in sync with the natural world. By making small but meaningful changes to the four keys of wellness—how you sleep, eat, move, and connect—over the course of the year, you will reclaim your health, regain your energy, and let go of excess weight. At once a bold new philosophy and an accessible plan to live well all year long, The 4 Season Solution is a new health paradigm for an increasingly unhealthy world.

SEXUAL CITIZENS

A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus

By Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan

“This book offers a rich collection of student experiences. . . . A readable and thought-provoking work on a topic of concern on college campuses [that] successfully reaches a general audience, specifically students, parents, and policymakers.”

—Library Journal, starred review

“Incisive. . . . This detailed, practical inquiry should be mandatory reading for college administrators and parents of college-age children.”

—Publishers Weekly

“Absolutely essential reading to prepare teens for what they’ll encounter in college on both the social and sexual fronts.”

—Booklist

“A serious study of the causes of campus sexual assaults along with proposals for tackling this very real problem. . . . [A] significant sociological study.”

—Kirkus Reviews

“Sexual Citizens looks beyond the essential issue of explicit consent to an equally essential recognition of solutions based in formation of an equitable social fabric for which we are all responsible. These solutions could not only reduce the lifelong trauma of assault, but help build a sustainable foundation of sexual health and well-being for all.

Timely, authentic, and revolutionary.”

—J. Dennis Fortenberry, Donald Orr Professor of Adolescent Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine

“A timely and sweeping reassessment of campus sexual assault. Hirsch and Khan bring rich data and trenchant insight to bear on one of today’s most urgent issues. This is an exemplary work, sensitive to intersecting inequalities, that represents the future of social science. Provocative and profoundly relevant, Sexual Citizens opens up the possibility of crafting policies that engage the complicated realities of students’ lives with honesty and empathy.”

—Alondra Nelson, president of the Social Science Research Council

“This extraordinary book situates campus sexual assault in context. It teaches us how any particular sexual encounter is shaped as much by the people involved as it is by the history and prior education of the participants, by economic inequality, by the physical and social geography in which they are living. All of us with a responsibility for creating the campus spaces that can generate—or harm—health need to read this book.”

—Sandro Galea, dean and Robert A. Knox Professor, School of Public Health, Boston University

“Written with humanity and sharp sociological insight, Hirsch and Khan’s ecological approach moves beyond the adversarial model that has embroiled debates on campus sexual assault. It opens up new ways for thinking about—and responding to—the pressing problem of sexual assault on college campuses. Sexual Citizens will be essential reading for parents, young people, medical professionals, and educators.”

—Jennifer Cole, professor and chair, Department of Comparative Human Development, University of Chicago

In recent years, college campuses have come to the forefront of national conversations about sexual assault: its causes, the stigma survivors endure when they report, the consequences (or lack thereof) perpetrators face if exposed. How can we make college campuses safer so that sexual assault isn’t such a prevalent danger? How can external social pressures even before college predispose kids to commit assault? How can parents start dialogues with their children to teach them what constitutes healthy sexual behavior? And how can we change high school sex education in ways that make assaults less likely, and people’s sexual lives more fulfilling?

In SEXUAL CITIZENS: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus [W.W. Norton & Company; January 14, 2020; $27.95 hardcover], Columbia professors Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan answer these questions. The book is rich with the testimonies of over 150 Columbia students who participated in the Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT). Startling in their frankness and revelations, these experiences encompass explicit acts of violent rape and more subtle violations of consent that many people may not realize is assault, set in comparison to consensual sexual experiences that range from sweet and caring to startlingly impersonal and objectifying.

Hirsch and Khan’s goal, in sharing these stories, is not to make moral judgments or decide what the ideal legal ramifications of assault should be. Their approach is steeped in empathy, seeking to elucidate the social roots of sexual assault, approaching it as a public health problem, and to explain it by setting out a broader understanding of how sex is organized and what it means to young people in college. They put forth powerful new concepts to help explain the forces in young people’s sexual lives: sexual projects (the various motives college students have for pursuing sex), sexual citizenship (the possession of one’s sexual agency, and the respect for another’s), and sexual geographies (the landscapes, both physical and social, that shape the power dynamics and contexts of sex).

Hirsch and Khan have a remarkable eye for nuance—at every point in their exploration of campus culture they identify the ways race, class, age, and sexuality can intersect with gender to influence who is most at risk and who is most likely to commit offenses. In the chapter “The Toxic Campus Brew,” for example, Hirsch and Khan focus on the role alcohol plays in hookup culture, observing the way drinking laws often force students to enter spaces controlled by older men if they want alcohol—especially wealthy men from historically white fraternities.

Grounded in the intimate, often painful accounts of the human beings at its center, SEXUAL CITIZENS is a bold, comprehensive analysis of a social ecosystem where sexual assault is a regular feature. Eradicating this endemic problem in college life must begin with empowering teachers, policy makers, parents, and students. This text will be an essential impetus and resource for such progress.

ABOUT THE BOOK
In SEXUAL CITIZENS: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus, Columbia professors Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan lay out an expansive, empirically-grounded vision for campus sexual assault prevention. The book is rich with the testimonies of over 150 Columbia students who participated in the Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT). Startling in their frankness and revelations, these experiences encompass explicit acts of violent rape and more subtle violations of consent that many people may not realize is assault, juxtaposed against consensual sexual experiences that range from sweet and caring to startlingly impersonal and objectifying. Hirsch and Khan’s goal, in sharing these stories, is not to make moral judgments or decide what the ideal legal ramifications of assault should be.

Grounded in empathy and compassion for the many struggles that young people face, they approach sexual assault as a public health problem and explain it by setting out a broader understanding of how sex is organized and what it means to young people in college.

Grounded in the intimate, often painful accounts of the human beings at its center, SEXUAL CITIZENS is a bold and comprehensive analysis of a social ecosystem where sexual assault is a regular feature, concluding with a bracing set of recommendations for what families, teachers, policy makers, and leaders in higher education can do to prevent it.

A 2017 Best Spoken Word Album Grammy Nominee!

Confessions of a Serial Songwriter is an amusing and poignant memoir about songwriter Shelly Peiken's journey from young girl falling under the spell of magical songs to working professional songwriter writing hits of her own. It's about growing up, the creative process – the highs and the lows, the conflicts that arise between motherhood and career success, the divas and schemers, but also the talented and remarkable people she's found along the way. It's filled with stories and step-by-step advice about the songwriting process, especially collaboration. And it's about the challenge of staying relevant in a rapidly changing and youth-driven world.

As Shelly so eloquently states in Confessions of a Serial Songwriter: “If I had to come up with one X factor that I could cite as a characteristic most hit songs have in common (and this excludes hit songs that are put forth by an already well-oiled machine...that is, a recording artist who has so much notoriety and momentum that just about anything he or she releases, as long as it's 'pretty good ' will have a decent shot at succeeding), I would say it would be: A universal sentiment in a unique frame.” Peiken has tapped the universal sentiment again and again; her songs have been recorded by such artists as Christina Aguilera, Natalie Cole, Selena Gomez, Celine Dion, the Pretenders, and others. In Confessions of a Serial Songwriter, she pulls the curtain back on the music business from the perspective of a behind-the-scenes hit creator and shares invaluable insight into the craft of songwriting.

3/2/20 @9:30am pst - Janeane speaks with Angelika Buettner, the award-winning photographer behind I AM - Celebrating the Perfect Imperfect.

LISTEN to today's show featuring Angelika Buettner

A CAPTIVATING COLLECTION OF NUDE PHOTOGRAPHY AND PERSONAL NARRATIVES IN THE NEW BOOK, I AM - CELEBRATING THE PERFECT IMPERFECT, DRAWS A SPOTLIGHT ON THE AGELESS BEAUTY OF 121 WOMEN OVER THE AGE OF 40

What is age anyway?

We are all ageless spiritual beings continuing to explore and celebrate our shared journeys.

In I AM - Celebrating the Perfect Imperfect, photographer Angelika Buettner celebrates ageless beauty through the voices of 121 women between the ages of 40 and 99. The beautiful photography book pairs nude photography of the women with essays, quotes and poems that depict their powerful stories. To challenge the stereotypes of beauty and age, Angelika uses her camera as a therapeutic tool and instrument of social commentary, and in doing so, she encourages women to embrace their femininity.

The book features portraits of strong women who dare to step out of their comfort zone. One of the profiles is around Chiara D’Agostino, who is photographed on pages next to her emotional personal story about her journey of self-love as a result of her battles with breast cancer. “Am I still a woman without breasts?” Chiara asks. “I’m the same person inside [without them], and I believe we shine from the inside out, so sexy and beautiful is how I feel about myself.”

Rather than creating another nude book where women are portrayed as sexual objects, Angelika’s vision was to empower women aged 40 and older to feel more visible. She found women from all walks of life and captured them in various urban and suburban settings, from shooting in icy snow and on the Manhattan Bridge, to taking photos on a roof, in the outdoors and more. None of the images have been retouched, and no makeup artist or stylist was involved. Contrary to her regular approach to photography, Angelika had no staff at the shoots for the book – she conducted one-on-one sessions to create a comfortable and intimate experience for each of the women.

“121 is the number of pictures I chose to develop for this book, but I will never stop taking these kinds of photos,” says Angelika. “I cherish the process of creating art from photographing the female body in all its ages, shapes and ethnicities. I hope this book serves as a reminder or wake-up call that we, as a society, need to create a more truthful world that places more value on women’s thoughts and feelings rather than on their outer appearances. We must all participate in creating a better, more loving and respectful world.”

Inspired by her own experiences of working in advertising and on beauty and fashion editorials in Paris, Angelika spent seven years developing the photography for the book. She started in Paris and completed the project after moving to the New York City area. By working on advertisements and editorials where older women were rarely the protagonists, Angelika realized that as a photographer, she can provide a platform for women to share their stories. In the process, Angelika not only created a beautiful book, but also a movement – a safe place for women to celebrate their imperfectly perfect selves.

To further enhance the discussion around ageless beauty, Angelika joined forces with Karen Williams, a model and advocate for “Empowered Aging,” to create a series of videos that bring the stories of the women featured in the I AM book to life. The series includes a total of 15 video interviews with the women, hosted and produced by Karen. Select previews are available on YouTube and IGTV, and the full series will be released on YouTube throughout 2020.

The final product of I AM is a cross generational collaboration that touches on universal issues, expanding the definition of beauty for future generations and for all women and men to understand.

Praise for I AM - Celebrating the Perfect Imperfect continues to come in.
Here is a sampling:

“I AM - Celebrating the Perfect Imperfect is a visual feast of beauty, vulnerability and courage. It is good medicine.”

– Christiane Northrup, M.D., New York Times best-selling author of Goddesses Never Age, The Wisdom of Menopause, and Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom

“I have to be honest, I was first drawn to Angelika’s photography because of the deep affinity I have with her last name. But soon, I was drawn into her exquisitely styled imagery, and the raw gorgeousness she brings out in the people she photographs. Angelika’s pictures may not help you live longer, but they will help you enjoy the journey. I AM - Celebrating the Perfect Imperfect transcends age to show that beauty shines at every stage in life.”

– Dan Buettner, National Geographic Fellow and New York Times Bestselling author of Blue Zones

“From the first page, this book shines with a celebration of women’s beauty as they age. No makeovers, no retouching – these are women celebrating their time of life, and their authenticity, self-acceptance, and joy. I AM - Celebrating the Perfect Imperfect kicks at our outdated notion that we age out of beauty and desirability. It’s quite the contrary, as Angelika Buettner and her 121 brave women illustrate. There is great power in this book.”

– Joan Price, ageless sexuality author and speaker
