TODAY 10/30/18, Janeane spoke with ANNE LAMOTT, The beloved, bestselling author shares newest book, Almost Everything: Notes on Hope - AUDIO>>

LISTEN to today's
conversation with Anne Lamott!

“Every writer, truth-seeker, parent, and activist I know is in love with one or more books by

Anne Lamott… [S]he writes as naturally as she breathes, she explores the mysterious paths

and detours of life itself, and she reports back to make the way ahead easier for all of us.”

—Gloria Steinem, Cosmopolitan

What does hope look like? How do we find and hold onto it in the midst of personal turmoil, communal suffering, global chaos, and the everyday challenges of being alive in this world? Enter the profoundly wise and compassionate Anne Lamott, whose “words heal us all” (Associated Press). ALMOST EVERYTHING: Notes on Hope is an exploration of hope and the place it holds in our lives. Marvelously candid and remarkably perceptive, Lamott shares truths she has learned along the way (“almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you”), offering compelling lessons through memorable storytelling and mixing humor with piercing insight. As Maria Popova says, “Anne Lamott embraces language and life with equal zest, squeezing from the intersection wisdom of the most soul-stretching kind” (Brainpickings).

Anne Lamott speaks with Janeane October 30th as she shares stirring perspectives on:

· forgiveness

· generosity towards oneself and others

· the ways joy can be a radical act

· how “fear, against all odds, leads to community, to bravery and right action, and these give us hope.”

Meet Anne Lamott on her latest book tour coming to San Diego 11/13!

ALMOST EVERYTHING illuminates our human condition as only Anne Lamott can. Like all her best-selling, deeply beloved books, her examination of hope balances “wry, acidic humor with deep feeling” (Boston Globe), making “you laugh at the same time she makes you think” (Denver Post). She “has a gift for putting into words what it means to accept and ultimately embrace the beauty, mystery, and pain that is life” (San Antonio Express-News), and as a reviewer for the Chicago Tribune wrote of her work, “Lamott’s wise counsel…has shaped my brain and heart in ways that are nearly impossible to measure.”

Anne Lamott is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Hallelujah Anyway; Small Victories; Stitches; Help, Thanks, Wow; Some Assembly Required; Grace (Eventually); Plan B; Bird by Bird; and Traveling Mercies, as well as several novels, including Imperfect Birds and Rosie. A past recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and an inductee to the California Hall of Fame, she lives in Northern California and is online @AnneLamott.

10/29/18 - Post show conversation with the fabulous June Millington of the band Fanny Walked the Earth!

LISTEN to today's conversation with June Millington!

ABOUT JUNE MILLINGTON

June Millington has been making music since she was a child playing ukulele in her native Philippines. Having moved from Manila to California in the early sixties, she and her sister, bassist Jean, turned in their folk guitars for electric and formed a succession of all-girl bands. By ‘69 they were in Hollywood with their band Fanny, which was the first all women’s rock band to be signed to a major label that released an entire album (Reprise/Warner Brothers). Through five successful albums and extensive touring of Europe and North America, Fanny served notice that women could do more than simply sing, they could write and play passionate rock ‘n roll. As David Bowie said of the group in an interview with Rolling Stone:

“They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time ... They were extraordinary: They wrote everything, they played like motherfuckers ... They are as important as anyone else who’s ever been, ever ...” (RS, January 2000)

June left Fanny in 1973 and continued to record and perform with Jean (Ladies on the Stage, Ticket to Wonderful, Melting Pot, Play Like a Girl) as well as releasing solo albums Heartsong, Running, and One World, One Heart. In 1976 she toured with Cris Williamson on her first groundbreaking national tour backing the explosive Changer and the Changed. She produced Cris' follow up, Strange Paradise, and continued with other artists including Holly Near (Fire in the Rain), Mary Watkins (Something Moving), Melanie DeMore (Share My Song), and Bitch and Animal (Sour Juice and Rhyme). She is the co-founder and Artistic Director of the Institute for the Musical Arts [IMA], a non-profit organization for women and girls which hosts Rock ‘n Roll Girls Camps each summer. The Institute for the Musical Arts is an internationally known teaching, performing and recording facility supporting women in music and music-related business.

June released her autobiography “Land of a Thousand Bridges: Island Girl in a Rock ‘n Roll World” in June of 2015 and has received a great deal of resulting press including articles in Pitchfork, MS Magazine, and Newsweek as well as on NPR. Millington continues to perform, write and record and teaches at IMA as well as colleges and universities around North America.

June and Jean continued to record and perform throughout the 80’s and 90’s – with Jean taking time off to raise her two children and June, together with her partner Ann Hackler, founding the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA). The Institute is a teaching, performing and recording facility dedicated to supporting women and girls in music and music–related business. Millington is the Artistic Director of IMA, which, as part of its mission, runs summer rock PROGRAMS for girls and young women. June and Jean’s latest CD, Play Like a Girl is for the girls.

10/29/18 - Janeane spoke with Director Aaron Wolf about his film Restoring Tomorrow - AUDIO below!

LISTEN to today's conversation with featured guest Aaron Wolf!

AWARD WINNING “RESTORING TOMORROW” WILL BE SEEN ON 650 SCREENS ON NOVEMBER 13TH, PRESENTED BY FATHOM EVENTS

After touring the country in the current divided climate, Aaron Wolf brings his film of unification and hope back to where the inspirational journey began.

In a time where Restoring Tomorrow’s themes of bringing people together resonate more than ever, Aaron Wolf and Howling Wolf Productions’ award-winning feature recently premiered at the American Jewish Heritage Society in Manhattan. The Fathom Events specia screening on November 13th will include a special added value discussion featuring filmmaker Aaron Wolf,

Rabbi Steve Leder, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti,Phil Cooke, Michael Medved,Bishop Ken Ulmer,

Rev. Scott Coleglaizer and Rabbi Susan Goldberg

AWARD WINNING “RESTORING TOMORROW” PREMIERED OCTOBER 16 AT THE AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY
In a time where Restoring Tomorrow’s themes of bringing people together resonate more than ever, Aaron Wolf and Howling Wolf Productions’ award-winning feature will screen for the first time in Manhattan, on Tuesday, October 16 at the American Jewish Heritage Society, 15 West 16th Street, NYC 10011. This performance will be followed by a Q & A and conversation with Wolf and special guests.

As director Aaron Wolf showcased the film in festivals and private screenings across the country, finding very similar dilapidation and a hunger for a deeper connection, it became even more clear that this wasn’t just an L.A. story, it wasn’t just a story of faith, it was truly an American story, especially for the America of today. “In these divisive times, we need to restore ourselves by connecting with things that truly matter, so we can see so much that we share in common, whether red or blue, old or young,” Wolf said. “Our film shows how communities around the nation can lead the way in bringing us back together. I found this in connecting to my place that mattered, Wilshire Boulevard Temple, and in exploring others around the country, as seen in the film, to so many different races, religions and cultures.”

Restoring Tomorrow, tells the tale of Los Angeles’ Wilshire Boulevard Temple, built in 1929 by the original Hollywood moguls. With its towering ten-story-high dome, it ranks with the Chinese Theater and Griffith Planetarium as among the great Los Angeles landmarks. But by the 21st century, it required tens of millions of dollars of restoration to avoid the wrecking ball and, ultimately, save the surrounding neighborhood. This against-all-odds story is told through the personal journey of director Aaron Wolf who, like so many of his generation, had become disaffected from his faith. In chronicling the Temple’s restoration, led by Rabbi Steve Leder, Wolf finds a personal restoration happening, as he reconnects with and finds new meaning in his community. Ultimately, the Temple’s story becomes a model for communities everywhere, as it demonstrates how, with determination and common purpose we can breathe new life into treasured places that matter.

The film’s production company, Howling Wolf Productions, will be donating a portion of ticket sales to The Interreligious Council of Southern California, which Wolf’s grandfather, Rabbi Alfred Wolf, founded. Wolf added, “My grandfather escaped from Nazi Germany. When I started making Restoring Tomorrow, I thought the term ‘Nazi’ was a thing of the past. Now sadly, it is in the headlines again. In some small way, I hope this film will help promote the bridge-building work of my grandfather, so we can heal again, and the conversation can continue. I’m astounded by the thoughtful conversations that viewers of all backgrounds have with me at end of the film, which definitely takes them to a place they don’t see coming. It’s a beautiful thing to see and I can’t wait to bring those conversations to the city where I grew up.”

Come see the documentary that critic Leonard Maltin calls “a genuinely inspiring film” and have the opportunity to speak with Wolf who will appear alongside special guests at selected screenings for post-film discussions during Restoring Tomorrow’s run.

RELATIONSHIP SANITY: Creating and Maintaining Healthy Relationships (a Central Recovery Press paperback, on sale October 23, 2018) on for an interview. In this follow-up to their well-received title, Irrelationship - psychoanalyst Mark Borg, psychiatrist Grant Brenner, and registered nurse Daniel Berry draw on their extensive clinical research and experience to show how we use our relationships to hide from intimacy and how our childhood caretakers’ inability to address their own emotional needs impacts our adult relationships. Offering accessible assessment tools to help identify damaging habits, this team of experts provides readers with a step-by-step guide to help us embrace vulnerability and properly nurture and commit to the relationships we value.

About RELATIONSHIP SANITY:

Most of us want to be in loving, honest, open-hearted relationships, but few of us are aware that we may also be afraid of intimacy. If we grew up in less-than-perfect families, then we likely internalized a way of dealing with loved ones that prevents us from embracing the intimate relationships and meaningful connections that we so desperately crave. As a result, many of us are trapped in dysfunctional relationships, not just with significant others, but also with family members, coworkers, and friends.

In RELATIONSHIP SANITY: Creating and Maintaining Healthy Relationships (a Central Recovery Press paperback, on sale October 23, 2018) - the follow-up to their bestselling title, Irrelationship - psychoanalyst Mark Borg, psychiatrist Grant Brenner, and registered nurse Daniel Berry draw on their extensive clinical research and experience to illuminate the underlying issues that prevent us from entering into authentic relationships. Offering accessible assessment tools to help identify damaging habits, this team of experts provides readers with a step-by-step guide to help them develop compassionate empathy, embrace vulnerability, and commit to an ongoing nurturing of the relationships they value.

Drawing on relatable case studies of those who addressed their dysfunctional, toxic, or estranged relationships, Borg, Brenner, and Berry show readers how to approach common relationship hurdles by using:

1. The 40-20-40. This tool creates a safe space for partners to interact by creating a middle ground (20 percent) for negotiating issues created by differences they bring to the table from their respective (40 percent).

2. GRAFTS Assessment. Partners learn which role they have taken on since childhood (Good, Right, Absent, Funny, Tense, Smart). Identifying roles empowers us to take responsibility for damaging behaviors that we contribute to the relationship.

3. Compassionate Empathy. This tool teaches self-acceptance and open-hearted listening so that partners can name and own each other’s needs and desires.

4. The Dream Sequence. Standing for Discovery, Repair, Empowerment, Alternatives, and Mutuality, this proven step-by-step process helps partners learn how to create safe, intimate relationships despite feelings of vulnerability.

Utilizing quizzes, exercises, and assessment charts, RELATIONSHIP SANITY enables readers to ascertain and counteract the detrimental, ingrained behaviors that negatively impact adult relationships. Perfect for those who have become lonely in their relationships, as well as for those who are trapped in toxic exchanges, this essential guide offers invaluable tools for anyone seeking healthier connections with their partners, loved ones, and colleagues.

ABOUT
People in resilient relationships are co-owners, experience reciprocity, and are better prepared to meet challenges authentically and effectively. In this sequel to the best-selling Irrelationship, the authors use examples from their clinical practice to review the concept of irrelationship and expand the DREAM Sequence, a tool used by affected couples to address perennial relationship issues.

By mutually and mindfully viewing the relationship as a third entity, separate from each individual, couples will learn how to live in and with the ambiguity of empathy, intimacy, vulnerability, and emotional investment and view relationship sanity as a deliberate and joyful undertaking to maintain and deepen connection.

About Robert Mangiardi
Robert Mangiardi is a New York actor who came from a family of 9 children. His father was a prominent NY heart surgeon and, although many of his siblings pursued the medical field, Robert did not. His first acting venture was in a high school play The Apple Tree, a musical where he played Adam and he admits he did it to meet the leading lady Janet Murphy who later went on to become Vice President of casting for ABC TV in New York. The play was directed by Peter Strain who went on to become a prominent talent agency on both coasts.

He did not attempt to act again until he came to Los Angeles in his mid-thirties and attended an acting class by famed Hollywood director Daniel Mann. Daniel could be brutal was his comments to his actors but the very first scene Robert put up was greeted by such a complimentary response that the actor cried on the spot-he had finally found his calling. His very first role was a recalling role on the famed CBS series Wiseguy which starred the late Ray Sharkey and Ken Whal. The show was a precursor for the likes of The Sopranos and was hailed by critics as one of the "Top 100 TV Shows Ever'. Guest star roles on shows such as Murder She Wrote, Midnight Caller and Jake and the Fat Man, to name a few quickly followed.

At that time he shared an apartment in LA with Canadian actor Bernie Coulson and Brad Pitt was a frequent guest as he and Bernie were best friends. Robert abruptly quit acting and left for New York wherein he recorded a jazz CD Deep in the Black which featured Robert's vocals over standards and original compositions. He then, with fellow actor Ric Rogers , made the acclaimed documentary film Stay Away a Little Closer which was about the troubled life of mentor and best friend, the acclaimed playwright John Ford Noonan.

The film won best Bio Doc at the NY International Film Festival in 2006 and has been in festivals around the country. Robert revisited acting in 2006 in the acclaimed film Death of a President which won the Grand Prize at the Toronto Film Festival in 2006 in which Robert starred in an ensemble cast. It was at that time he decided he wanted back into acting and came back to LA in 2009. Last year he starred in the play Hellz Kitchen Abaze, which ran for nine months at the Pan Andreas and Elephant Theatre respectively and won critics pick in virtually every publication in town. Robert's work as the frayed NYPD detective Gino Spucinelli garnered considerable praise from the press and his peers alike.

Then Robert starred along with Michael Pare and Frank D'Angelo in Real Gangsters and since has been on Criminal Minds along with other film and TV projects. This fall he is pleased to bring back his role of "Pug" in the play "The Birches." at the Lounge Theater in Hollywood written by cast member Patty Gliniewicz. AWARD WINNING AUTHOR DANA CHAMBLEE CARPENTER RELEASES FINAL INSTALLMENT IN BOHEMIAN TRILOGY

LISTEN to today's show!

Dana's first book, “Bohemian Gospel” was awarded the Killer Nashville Claymore Award. The second book in her trilogy, “The Devil’s Bible” not only won the Silver Falchion in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror category but also Best Overall novel at Killer Nashville.

NASHVILLE, TN – Dana Chamblee Carpenter closes out her award-winning series Bohemian Trilogy with “Book of the Just” (October 2, 2018, Pegasus Books), which continues Mouse’s story after “The Devil’s Bible” and completes the journey she started so long ago in “Bohemian Gospel.” The first book in the series, “Bohemian Gospel”, won the 2014 Killer Nashville Claymore Award. Publishers Weekly called it “a deliciously creepy debut.” Her second book, “The Devil’s Bible,” also received rave reviews. Booklist said: “Carpenter’s follow-up to her debut novel, Bohemian Gospel, is as richly woven as her first. A terrific follow-up.”

Imbued with a rich sense of history, magic, and mythology, Mouse’s journey is coming to an end. After centuries of searching, Mouse now has everything she’s ever wanted within her reach—a normal life, a lover, a brother. Cherished by a father, coveted by a king, loved by an almost-priest; tormented by demons, tortured by a madman, hunted by a cult, hounded by her father. Mouse has survived it all. But then, she was never just a girl.

Dana Chamblee Carpenter is the author of “Book of the Just,” the third novel in The Bohemian Trilogy. Carpenter’s award winning short fiction has also appeared in The Arkansas Review, Jersey Devil Press, Maypop, and, most recently in the anthologies, “Dead Ends: Stories from the Gothic South,” and “Killer Nashville Noir: Cold Blooded.” She teaches at a university in Nashville, TN where she lives with her husband and two children. Paranormal Thriller

In an interview, Dana can discuss:

The in-depth research she did into the 13th century, Bohemian and other cultures’ histories for her books

How she balances writing within different genres (thriller, paranormal, historical fiction) in the Bohemian Trilogy

Her success with “Bohemian Gospel”, which won Killer Nashville's Claymore Award, and how/if that influenced the rest of the series

How her career as an educator has played a role in her writing career

The journey her characters have taken through this series and the ethical and moral questions they encounter in “Book of the Just”

Her interest in exploring cultures, experience, and realities that many readers are not traditionally exposed to

DANA CHAMBLEE CARPENTER

How did Mouse's story first come to you? Did you ever see it going as far as a trilogy?

When I tell the story about meeting Mouse, I always feel like I have to clarify first that I’m not crazy—but she came to me in a vision. (And in my defense, I’m not the only writer who talks about seeing “visions.”) I’m a mom, which means much of my time is spoken for, so getting some quiet time when no one needs something from me is like finding the Golden Ticket. This particular Willy Wonka moment came on a ride back home (to Arkansas) for Thanksgiving.

The kids were watching a movie in the backseat. My husband was driving. And my mind was free to wander. Wander it did—all the way to a battlefield somewhere in history (they had swords and were on horseback) and to a woman who stood looking out over the fighting. She wore the most terrible expression of anguish and determination. I was fascinated. I HAD to know who she was and why she was mad and what she was determined to do. But even with the vividness of the scene, I think I would have lost her if I hadn’t heard her name whispered like an echo on the wind—Mouse. I grabbed a napkin from the floorboard and a pen from the console and jotted it all down.

As far as thinking about Mouse’s story in terms of a number of books—no, not really. But I knew pretty quickly that there was something odd about her, and once I realized what it was, I knew that she had LOTS of story to tell and that I wouldn’t be able to finish it in one book. The BOHEMIAN TRILOGY gives us a nice arc—from discovery of who she is in BOHEMIAN GOSPEL and wrestling with guilt of what she does in THE DEVIL’S BIBLE to facing her most dangerous temptation and most desperate quest for redemption in THE BOOK OF THE JUST.

You give such an intriguing glimpse of history and culture that is often not touched upon. What drew you to write a story in Bohemia during the 13th century and the new amazing places “Book of the Just” takes us?

I don’t tend to start out with a setting in mind—how fun would it be to know your destination ahead of time? I go where the character takes me, and it makes for a much more adventurous journey. When I discovered the connection between Mouse and the infamous medieval codex known as the Devil’s Bible, I knew her story started in the 13th century in Bohemia because that’s where and when the codex was written. But once Mouse got me there, I fell in love. I sometimes wonder if, in a different life, I lived in that part of the world.

The more I learned about the places and the people and the stories and the culture, the more I felt like I was coming home somehow. Similarly, practical aspects of the story took me to the places in BOOK OF THE JUST. Parts of Australia are remote and shrouded in ancient mythical truths—just the kind of spot Mouse would go if she needed a place to hide. Likewise, the Book of the Just (a real book like the Devil’s Bible) and my research of ancient Hebrew history took me to the Middle East and parts of Africa. And again, I felt a visceral connection to these places and a deep respect for the people who live there. I love going to these places and I love taking my readers with me. Too often we get anchored in our comfortable spaces and forget how beautifully diverse the world is. I want to make the unfamiliar familiar for myself and my readers so we can appreciate our differences while reveling in the joy of all that makes us human.

How does your career as a teacher influence your writing?

I really don’t think of teaching or writing as a career. Career seems like something you choose. Writing and teaching chose me—sometimes against my will. ☺ I guess that makes them a calling. Whatever we name them, they are both integral parts of who I am, entwined and inseparable. I see teaching as a form of storytelling. Education is about learning to hear the stories around us, to connect to them and empathize with them, to understand them so that we can learn our own stories—in truth and without posturing or judgment. And then, once we’ve listened to or read the stories around us, we must learn to tell those stories and our own. Storytelling is also a form of teaching. The journey of writing and research teaches me so much about humanity and the world and history and science, the known and the unknown. I learn and then I share that with my readers, and then my readers teach me. It’s the same process I go through as a teacher—I learn and share with my students and then my students teach me. I suppose the deep current running through all of it is an insatiable curiosity.

Mouse's relationship with her father brings to light a lot of questions of morality and forgiveness. Tell us more about this tension in their relationship and also how the characters in “Book of the Just” deal with temptations.

I grew up attending a traditional protestant church in rural Arkansas. I can’t tell you how many times my Sunday school teachers reached out to my parents—worried because I was asking so many questions. (The most awkward was probably when I asked for a definition of circumcision. ☺) Fortunately, my mom and dad encouraged me to ask questions (they also explained circumcision) and to seek out my own answers. One of the questions that kept me up at night was about the “Unforgivable Sin.” What was it? The idea that there was some unnamed “something” I might do that was unforgivable had me tied up in knots. When I became an adult, I realized how complicated forgiveness was—especially forgiving yourself.

That’s the wrestling match at the heart of Mouse’s relationship with her father. It’s something they both share in an incredibly unique way. And, it’s ultimately the issue that drives them apart in THE DEVIL’S BIBLE. She makes one choice about forgiveness and he makes another. But in BOOK OF THE JUST, Mouse’s capacity for forgiveness is tested beyond even her endurance. It brings her closer to her father—dangerously close.

Your writing intricately mixes history, thriller, and a feeling of mysticism and magic. What things do you see influencing these aspects of your writing?

I’ve always been an eclectic reader. I read everything, every genre, including poetry and plays, both “literary” fiction and “commercial.” (I’m not sure what those labels offer us so I’m wary about using them.) I love going to new places and new times, and I love playing with “what ifs.” When I go looking for a common thread in my favorite writers, be it Eudora Welty or Maya Angelou or Neil Gaiman or William Faulkner or Stephen King or Katherine Howe or Naomi Novik or countless others, I see that each of them and the stories I find most compelling reveal a world to me where there is so much more that we don’t understand than what we think we do. That’s the world I want to live in—full of the thrill of discovery and the play of what if. And that’s the world I want to create for my readers, too. The unknown, the mysterious, the magical lives among us in the everyday. We just have to teach ourselves to look for it.
